Epilepsy surgery — a ray of hope for many
Shivani Bhakoo

Ludhiana, August 21
About 70-80 per cent of the epileptic patients get cured with medication and the remaining 20 per cent patients fall under intractable epilepsy, who can be cured through surgery.

But the surgical procedure involves specialised tests which include MRI and video EEG and coordination of an epileptologist, neurosurgeon, neuroradiologist and neuropsychologist.

These views were expressed by Dr V.P.Singh, former Additional Professor and Unit Head, Neurosurgery Department and Gamma Knife Centre, AIIMS, Delhi.

Dr Singh was in the city today to establish Epilepsy Surgery centre at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Dr Singh said the surgical procedure was straight forward and any good surgeon could perform it, but there was a need of proper selection of cases.

“Though the epilepsy surgery is quite old but for many years medical fraternity has not been able to localize it. In the last few years, it has picked up again,” said Dr V.P. Singh.

The surgery could be performed on a small child, too, but majority of patients were between 10 years to 30 years of age. The procedure was safe but involved certain side-effects also as everything was related with brain.

Dr Singh said epilepsy surgery was currently being undertaken at very few institutes, including SCTIMST, Trivendrum, and AIIMS, New Delhi.

As per international guidelines, one epilepsy centre could cater to about 200 surgeries in a year.

There was an emergent need to develop the surgery in various parts of the country.

“DMCH has embarked on this venture to establish epilepsy surgery in this institution to serve the people of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. I would perform surgeries with the local Neurosurgery team at DMCH,” said Dr V.P. Singh.

The tests would cost around Rs 15,000 while the cost of surgery would be anything between Rs 40,000-Rs 50,000.

Anil Datt

Ludhiana, August 21
Pandemonium prevailed at the one-day Ludhiana District Athletics Championship, organised by the District Athletics Association (DAA) at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. More than 250 participants drawn from different schools of the district took part in various events conducted in different age groups. All events were held in a single day and the organisers failed to cope up with the rush of participants.

As this was not enough, a football match between the deaf and dumb players from Rest of Punjab and Jalandhar XI was played at the venue, causing discomfort to the athletes and the officials. Though the athetic events were halted for the time when the football match was in progress, it certainly affected rhythm of athletes and performance as well.

The officials, appointed by the organisers to conduct the meet, were found wanting as they had to complete the events today itself. Moreover, the young budding athletes failed to give their best as they sweat it out in a scroching heat and humid conditions. The parents, accompanying the players were a harassed lot, braving the heat and had to rush repeatedly to fetch water for their wards.

A young girl from Kundan Vidya Mandir School who competed in 100 sprint, 400 m, 800 m and was awaiting her turn for the gruelling races scheduled for the later in the day. She rued that the meet could have been held in two or three days as this has affected the players’ performance.

When asked why the DAA had decided to hold the meet in one day, Mr P S Pannu, general secretary of the association, said they had to pay Rs 5,000 per day to the Punjab Sports Department for using the stadium and thus they had no alternative but to complete the meet in a day.
