Militancy has come down in valley, says General
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, August 21
Claiming that over 1500 militants were operating in Jammu and Kashmir, Lieut-Gen Hari Prasad, GOC-in-C, Northern Command, here today said that the level of militancy had drastically reduced by 50 per cent. He, however, said that even though there was ceasefire along the borders and improvement in relations between India and Pakistan, there was no decline in the attempts of infiltration.

Lieut-Gen Hari Prasad was addressing a press conference here today ahead of his retirement after putting in over 41 years of service. He said that about 43 per cent of militants operating in the state were foreigners, adding that over 75 per cent of the militant leadership had been eliminated. There was tremendous pressure on those still operating and indulging in “actions to show their presence”, he added.

The GOC-in-C held that normalcy in Kashmir was round the corner and it was a matter of time before complete normalcy was restored in Kashmir. He said that the Army had put in its characteristic role along the borders in this trouble-torn-state as well as in the hinterland.

“I leave as a happy and proud man…. normalcy is round the corner”, Lieut-Gen Hari Prasad said as he recalled his 41-year-long tenure in the Army with “major portion of services” in Jammu and Kashmir. Hailing from a village in Andhra Pradesh, he was educated in Bangalore, before joining the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He was first posted in Jammu and Kashmir in 1967. In 1971, he was posted in Gulmarg-Uri sector of the LoC and also held the command of the Dagger division in North Kashmir.
