Chandigarh, August 13
Satinder Sharma, the lone hockey referee based in Chandigarh with creditable performance at the international level will be honoured by the Chandigarh Administration on Independence Day.

Satinder Sharma, an officer with the State Bank of India, said he had officiated in 65 international matches and was the only referee in India to achieve this rare honour. For the past many years, Satinder has been officiating in international matches, including 2004 Athens Olympics, where he officiated in seven matches.

Though it is a much delayed honour, Satinder is happy with the announcement as he is the only sportsperson chosen by the Administration.

Satinder has been in the elite group of 15 umpires chosen by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). He has also officiated in a senior world cup, Busan Asian Games, two junior world cups, Champions Trophy, Olympic qualifiers and other international tournaments.

He is thrilled to learn the news. “I thank the Chandigarh Administration for considering my case and selecting me for the prestigious award to be conferred on August 15,” he said.

This year Satinder has plans to officiate in Champions Trophy to be held in Chennai in December. He said next year he hopes to officiate in big international tournaments like Commonwealth Games 2006 in March in Melbourne, world cup qualifier and Doha Asian Games 2006.
