College teachers to protest on September 5

Ludhiana, August 8
The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) has decided to observe Teacher’s Day (September 5) as “Protest Day” by proceeding on mass casual leave to take part in a march in Chandigarh against the alleged indifferent attitude of the government towards PCCTU members’ grievances and problems.

Stating this to the Press here today, Prof R.S. Brar and Dr Jagwant Singh, president and general secretary of PCCTU, informed that this decision was taken in a meeting of state PCCTU office-bearers held at GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana, today.

Giving details of the other decisions taken at the meeting, Prof Brar and Dr Jagwant said on August 10, private college teachers all over Punjab would wear black badges to express solidarity with non-government aided schoolteachers of Punjab agitating for their demands.

PCCTU senior leaders said private college teachers all over Punjab would observe “Save Higher Education Day” by organising campus dharnas and rallies from 12 noon to 2 pm in the colleges on August 23.

They said on August 25, the PCCTU would observe “Manifesto Reminder Day” by organising campus rallies to remind the Chief Minister to honour poll promises made to the PCCTU during the Assembly poll 2002 campaign.

The union demands include 50 per cent DA merger with basic pay, implementation of Dr S.S. Johl Committee recommendations, grant of HRA to teachers serving in rural private colleges of Punjab, grant of pension-gratuity scheme of December 18, 1996, parity to DPEs and librarians, release of regular 95 per cent grant-in-aid to private colleges and relaxation in refresher course condition.

Farm machinery manufacturers attend course

The training unit of the College of Agricultural Engineering, PAU, organised a four-day training course on “Use of emerging technologies in manufacturing of agricultural machinery and its export” for the agricultural machinery manufacturers of the state.

The course was organised in collaboration with the Department of Farm Power and Machinery and the Department of Business Management of the university.

Seventeen manufacturers from the state attended the course. Lectures on quality certification of units, requirements and documentation of exports and tips on successful marketing were delivered by the faculty. Special lectures on export potential of the farm machinery and credit lending to small-scale industries were also arranged from the Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) and the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), Ludhiana, for the participants.

Dr S.S. Ahua, Head of the Farm Power and Machinery Department, observed that agricultural machinery parts were lacking standardisation. He asked manufacturers to lay more emphasis on quality and standardisation.

Dr Manjeet Singh, coordinator of the course, advised the participants to exploit the use of computer tool in drawing and modelling of parts. He said only 4-5 manufacturers of the state have their worldwide web address on the Internet at present.

Mr Jasmail Singh, secretary, Punjab Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (PAMMA), said the export of small-scale industries had increased by 180 per cent in past four years, but export of agricultural machinery was not in tune with this. The course would help analyse global market by using emerging technologies in manufacturing.

Chahat Puri wins Whizkid contest

Students of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School participated in various events in the Horlicks Whizkid contest. The school won the overall trophy and was declared the Live Wire Champions 2005.

Chahat Puri of VII-A was chosen to represent the Wiz Junior Team representing Ludhiana at the national level to be held in Bangalore. The judges were impressed by Chahat’s speaking skills and dance performance, as she held the audience spell-bound. The school was declared the winner in the slogan-writing competition and won many first prizes in individual events.

Installation ceremony: The installation ceremony of the Students Central Association of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Model Town, Ludhiana, was held here today.

Ms Manju Chawla, principal of the college, handed over the ceremonious lamp to the new head girls — Manpreet Kaur (arts) and Jaspreet Kaur (commerce) and Deputy Head Girls Manpreet Kaur (arts) and Amandeep Kaur (commerce), who were to act as the torch -bearers of the college.

Representatives of various classes duly elected by students, head girls and deputy head girls were sworn in.

New session: The Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana, started its new academic session today.

In order to familiarise the students with the culture of the institute, an induction programme for new batch of BBA and BCA was organised.

Lecture contest: The Sikh Missionary College (Ludhiana Zone), arranged an inter-circle lecture competition in Gurdwara Nanak Darbar, Dhaba village here yesterday with the assistance of the Panchayat and Prabhandak Committee. In junior team seven students participated, while in the senior team eight students participated. The students, through their lectures, talked of Gurmat history and its maryada.

Teej celebrated: Teej celebrations were held at Lovely Lotus School here today. Children were told about the significance of the festival.

Girls enjoyed swings on a tree. Students were served with kheer and puas and at the end of the day they danced to the tunes of Punjabi folk songs.

“Love Guru” in city

Rocky Sandhu, a city youngman is rocking Bollywood these days. After his maiden film Tauba Tauba, which was released 6 months ago, had a good run, Rocky has acted in three more films and his comedy Love Guru is about to be released by end of August.

Rocky is in the city these days. Talking to the media at an informal press conference, he said,” The promos of Love Guru are being shown on ETC channel. It is a rib-tickling comedy. Dialogues have been written by Unus Sajawal, and the director is Rohit Kapoor.”

When asked whether he faced difficulty in finding a foothold in films, especially when he did not have any filmi background, he said, “Yes, I struggled a lot. For the first two years, I was busy learning fighting, riding, acting and meeting producers. The producer of Tauba Tauba wanted a new hero for the film and had called a number of people for the audition. Since I have a lot of confidence , I was selected. But I do feel that luck plays a major role in one’s success.”

“My next film is ‘Meri Life Mein Uski Wife’. It is also a comedy and has Shakti Kapoor. The heroine is Heena and director is Partho Ghosh. ‘Naughty Boy’ is the title of one of my forthcoming movies,” he said.

When asked that doing comic roles will label him as a comedian and then perhaps he will have a limited scope of acting, he said,”I am young and just three or four films will not label me.”

Age-related retinal problems in general and macular degeneration (AMD) in particular were discussed at length at the continuing medical education (CME) organised by the Ludhiana Ophthalmological Society (LOS) here last evening. More than 50 ophthalmic surgeons from the city and many other towns in the state attended the programme.

Dr Cyrus M. Shroff, internationally acclaimed vitreo-retinal surgeon from New Delhi and honorary ophthalmolic surgeon to the President of India, along with his junior colleagues, Dr Sanjeev Gupta and Dr Charu Gupta, focused on the latest modalities in treating age-related eye diseases. The guest speakers shared with the participants their experiences in the treatment of AMD with a special dye as well as laser.

Complicated surgical procedures for different eye diseases, including macular hole surgery with the state of the art instruments and equipment were shown in a presentation and the entire surgical procedure was explained in steps for the benefit of local eye surgeons.

During the interactive session which ensued, Dr Ravinder Kaur Malhi, Dr G.S. Dhami and Dr Dinesh Garg, besides several others, exchanged views with the visiting faculty members.

According to Dr Deepak K. Gupta, secretary of LOS, Dr Anurag Goswami, a general surgeon attended the CME on behalf of the Indian Medical Association and informed the participating eye surgeons that they had earned ‘one credit hour’ of CME for attending this programme.

The guest faculty was formally introduced by Dr G.S. Dhami, Dr Gupta, who also conducted the proceedings of the CME, informed that the local chapter remained the most active eye society in the state and had the disticntion of receiving the ‘best society award’ last year at the annual conference of the Punjab Ophthalmological Society.

Awareness camp for women

To celebrate International Breast-Feeding Week, the Sadbhavna Society and The Bengal Institute of Health Sciences organised a six-day awareness camp for women at Sattowal village, near here.

Organised in collaboration with The Punjab State Social Welfare Advisory Board, Chandigarh, the camp was attended by a large number of rural women from six villages falling under Raikot subdivision.

Dr A.K. Benerjee, convener of the camp, emphasised on the need for breast-feed.

Besides discussing the health problems of adolescent and reproductive women, various speakers talked about the legal rights of the women.

The organisation donated sewing machines to needy women.

Ludhiana braces for Asian cycling meet

The Punjab Agricultural University velodrome will be the venue for the 25th Asian Cycling Championship scheduled to start from December 11 to 18. Giving this information, Mr J.S. Grewal, general secretary, Cycling Federation of India (CFI), said besides India, teams from 20 countries would take part in the event.

Talking to the Ludhiana Tribune, Mr Grewal said such events were generally held in the Capital. Since the velodrome in the Capital was under renovation for the Commonwealth Games 2010, the Punjab Cycling Association had roped in the international body to allot the event to Ludhiana.

The representative of the Asian Cycling Council, Mr Datto Darshan Singh, from Malaysia, visited the city three months ago and approved the venue for the meet.

Mr Grewal said till date, the organisers had received written confirmations from 12 countries, Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Hong Kong, the Phillipines, Indonesia, Nepal, the UAE and Iran. The teams would start arriving on December 9.

The CFI was, in touch with two TV channels for the telecast rights.

Ms Amrit Kaur Gill, SDM (East), former international cyclist and secretary, organising committee, said Mr Narinder Pal Singh, SSP, Ludhiana, along with other police and administration officials, as well as PAU officials, had been helping them to make preparations for a smooth conduct of the event.

Road races would be held on the 17.5 km stretch between Doraha and Khanna.

Khanna police chief, Mr Nauniahal Singh, has chalked out a plan to regulate the traffic on the day of road race, Ms Gill said.

Mr Ramandeep Singh Grewal, former captain of the national hockey team and Deputy Director, Sports, PAU, Mr Manjit Singh, Assistant Director, and Dr Ramesh Sharma, Head of Department, Floriculture and Landscaping, accompanied Mr Grewal and Ms Gill when they visited the velodrome today.

Thousands attend funeral of kabaddi player

Hathur (Ahmedgarh), August 8
Kabaadi players and sports lovers in the area thronged this nondescript village to bid a tearful adieu to Amarjit Singh Ambi, kabaddi player who died in Canada after playing a match for the Calgary Sports Club, Canada.

The body of Ambi was cremated at the village crematorium. A large number of sports lovers had descended there to pay their tributes to the kabaddi star. His body was brought from Canada by his friends yesterday.

No official of the State Sports Department was present.

A large number of sports lovers gathered at Akhara Bridge to receive the body of the star. It was first taken to his home in a procession and then to the village crematorium, where representatives from various sports clubs and kabaddi academies laid wreaths.

Mr Surjit Singh Grewal SP (D), Sangrur, and Mr Rachhpal Singh, DSP, Malerkotla, both international kabaddi players, said the untimely death of Ambi had created a vacuum in the world of kabaddi.

Makhan Singh Chrik, coach of the deceased, Randhir Singh, DSP, Bhag Singh Malla, MLA, Sukhi from the Kotli Than Singh Academy, Malkiat Arraichan, Amarjit Singh Khaira and representatives from the International Kabaddi Club Joga, the Harjit Singh Talwar Club, Moga the Rara Sahib Kabaddi Club, the Dasmesh Club, Kalakh, the Guru Gobind Singh Academy, Kotli Khan Singh, the Dasmesh Club, Kapurthala, the Bazakhana Club, the DAV Club, Bathinda, the Veteran Club, Moga, and the Veteran Club, Ludhiana, mourned the death of the kabaddi star.
