Islam 9/11 and Global Terrorism: A Study of Perceptions and SolutionsTHERE is a growing misconception among most of the religious communities that Muslims are becoming terrorists, which may not actually a fact. Though a large number of terrorist organisations come from the Muslim community, Muslims as such cannot be branded as terrorists.

The Muslims have failed to keep pace with the advancement in science and technology. They remain in the background resulting in the backwardness in welfare as they live a life, which does not command respect from others. They are groping in the dark as to why they have become powerless and have not achieved as much as the other religious communities have achieved. Consequently, they suffered humiliation at the hands of their adversaries. This is one of the reasons that they are ready to even risk their lives for avenging the "injustice" perpetrated on them. This is perhaps the main cause of their turning towards terrorism.

The present-day Muslims, the world over, are powerless people. The defence budgets for all 57 organisations of Islamic countries are less than one-fourth of the annual Defence Budget of the USA. This is the reason why the western countries are exploiting these countries. This is also the reason why hatred is created for the adversary and which leads to terrorism.

The author has explained as to why the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon were carried out by Islamic terrorists. These attacks have created discrimination between the western society and the Muslims.

The author has given a number of answers, as to why is there Islamic terrorism? Is there something special in Islam, which breads to terrorism more than any other religion? Why are more Muslims becoming terrorists?

Terrorism is an act of compelling a person or a group of persons, by the application of or threat of application of fear, to commit or omit to do something which, in the normal circumstances, he or they won’t do. According to the author, terrorism can be defined as "a strategy whereby violence is used to produce certain effects in a group of people so as to attain some political ends".

Nazrul has identified various kinds of terrorism: international, national and regional terrorism; terrorism by the state and against the state; secular and religious terrorism; self-financing and financed by others terrorism and so on. He explains with examples and reasons as to why a particular type has been perpetrated.

The author has analysed in detail as to why more Muslims are indulging in terrorism. He has citied the examples of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Hindusm; war in Afghanistan and the US allied forces attack on Iraq as the main causes of terrorism. He has come to the conclusion that when a particular community or religion is ill treated or does not get its rightful place, it adopts terrorism to fight for its rights and becomes blind to human rights.

The author has led a scathing attack on the US and its allies by saying that they want a situation where they can do whatever they feel like. None in the world should raise voice against them. Many of the right thinking countries believe that the unjust activities of the US and its allies actually breed terrorism and these unjust activities should be stopped. Then, terrorism will stop automatically. He has given a number of reasons as to why the Muslims have refused peaceful negotiations with the US and its allies.

The book is a comprehensive study on terrorism and is a useful volume for those who want to know more on terrorism.
