Career Hotline
Organic farming a productive field
Pervin Malhotra

Q I am interested in organic farming. I believe it is a good business proposition. Please tell me from where I can do a course in organic farming?

Sukhbir

A Growing environmental concerns and health awareness has wrought a positive transformation in agricultural practices. Today, consumers are demanding food that is not laced with harmful pesticides and other pollutants. It is in this context that organic agriculture has emerged as a viable and eco-friendly solution that addresses the concerns of both the consumers as well as producers.

Organic farming is based on a holistic approach of sustainable eco-systems, safe food, good nutrition, animal welfare and social justice.

MR Morarka-GDC Rural Research Foundation offers a one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Organic Agriculture Management (PGDOAM).

Students will receive six months of theoretical inputs on organic agriculture practices, engineering technologies, organic biotechnology, organic standards, certification and organic agribusiness management, followed by six months of field training in areas such as market research for organic pest management, developing business for organic bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides etc.

After completing the programme, students are absorbed at the Project Coordinator or Project Assistant Manager level with a starting salary of approx Rs 2 lakh pa.

The total tuition fee for this accelerated management programme which is being offered in collaboration with the College of Technology and Engineering of Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology (MPUAT) is Rs 60,000. MPUAT has tied up with banks for educational loans to students enrolled for the programme.

In addition, the foundation has joined hands with US-based MESA (Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture) as a global partner for the new International Student Exchange Offer (8-12 months, beginning each March). Students will get hands-on training at organic farms assisting farmers in the US. In return, the host farms will pay students a cash stipend and provide them with lodging, boarding, varied assignments and cultural activities. Details: Website: www.pgdoam.com

The foundation also offers a certificate course in Organic Agriculture Management (6-mth) in collaboration with JRN Rajasthan Vidyapeeth (deemed) University. During this period, the students will undertake 80 days of farm and project work and theoretical classes on organic agriculture, organic inputs, solid waste management, water recycling, roof-water harvesting, organic standards and certification etc.

Eligibility is plus two and entrance is on the basis of a written exam on August 10 at Jaipur followed by a GD.

The application deadline for both courses is: July 30.

Animated interest

Q I am interested in becoming a 3D animation artist. What is the scope for a career in 3D animation in India as opposed to 2D? Could you also tell me the names of colleges abroad that offer graduate courses in animation?

— Gunjan Kocchar

A The box-office success of 3D films like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Shrek and Monsters Inc has revolutionised the very concept of animated features.

India’s share in the outsourcing of 2D animation boom may have been as flat as the 2D picture itself but when it comes to 3D, India can leapfrog on to the fast track provided we can overcome the currently lack of skilled manpower in 3D animation.

Philippine and Korean studios that worked as low-cost production outsourcing centres for big international media houses are finding it difficult to scale their operations from 2D to 3D. The skill set required for 3D animation is far more intricate than for 2D and animation houses in the US, UK and Canada are now on the lookout for alternate low-cost production centres for 3D animation.

For the Indian animation industry this is an excellent opportunity just waiting to be exploited, provided it can shore up competent manpower.

While an animator can do an entire 2D frame on his own, an entire team of artists have to work in tandem to get the lighting, composition, modelling and rigging right to compose a frame in 3D. This, in turn, calls for far higher degree of specialisation complemented with creative talent and computer skills.

While there are about 10,000 animators in the country, there is a demand for at least 50,000. The sky is the limit for 3D animators with experience. Essentially, the Indian animation industry is faced with the dilemma of not being able to recruit animators fresh out of college as they are too raw.

If you want to pursue studies abroad you can opt for the graduate courses offered at the University of California, LA or Calarts in the US or the Vancouver Film School and Sheridan in Canada.

MBA & teaching

Q After doing my B.Sc, I did MBA. Can I join a school as a postgraduate teacher for commerce after doing B.Ed?

Anant Khurana

A I am afraid not. For the simple reason that despite being a postgraduate qualification, MBA is a professional programme whose subjects do not directly match with the academic subjects taught in the commerce stream after class X at the school level.

However, since you have a BSc degree, you can enroll as a TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) up to middle school.

Instead, you could teach BBA course at the Bachelor’s degree level in a college. The better ones would ask for a NET/SLET score though.

Online options

Q I need to know about home-based Internet jobs. Are they reliable? How can one ensure the authenticity of the advertisement? Please guide.

Aditi Kaul

A Open any internet site and the chances are that you will be looking at advertisement banners telling you to work from home and earn pots of money. But then if that were true, wouldn’t we all be working from home. Here are some dos and don’ts before you take-up any such offer.

Know who you’re dealing with: The company may not be offering to employ you directly, only to sell you training materials and to find customers for your work. Most importantly, find out if there is really a market for your work.

Don’t believe that you can make big profits easily. Operating a home-based business requires hard work, skill, good products or services and time. Get references for other people who are doing the work. Ask them if the company kept its promises.

Be wary of offers to send you an advance on your pay. Some con artists use this ploy to build trust and get money from your bank. They send you a cheque for part of your first month’s pay. You deposit it, and the bank tells you the cheque has been cleared because the normal time has passed to be notified that cheques have bounced. Then the crook contacts you to say that you were mistakenly paid the wrong amount or that you need to return a portion of the payment for some other reason. After you send the money back, the cheque that you deposited finally bounces because it turned out to be an elaborate fake. Now the crooks have your payment, and you’re left owing your bank the amount that you withdrew.

Do your own research to find out lists of legitimate companies that hire people to work for them at home. You may discover that these companies hire only local people and that there is nothing available in your area.

Be aware of legal requirements. Some types of work cannot be done at home under law

Radiography route

Q I wish to pursue a career in radiography. Could you please tell me what it entails and suggest some relevant courses? Can I also do radiology after Class XII?

Amit Suchdeva

A A diagnostic radiographer is an expert at performing various medical imaging tests using hi-tech equipment like ultrasound, CAT scan, MRI, PET (Positron Emission Tomography), X-ray, operating radio imaging machines, and interpreting the results.

Besides preparing patients for the tests and operating the machines, with experience, your responsibilities will include maintenance of equipment and patient records.

Some cancers respond well to precisely targeted doses of radiation in combination with drugs. A radiographer may use radiation in highly controlled conditions to shrink the tumor.

A key member of a dedicated oncology team, the therapy radiographer is usually involved in every aspect of the treatment, including pre-treatment preparation, planning the delivery of the radiation, and the follow-up stages.

Both diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers provide essential services to millions of people. Without them, modern healthcare would collapse.

Without detailed images of what is happening inside the body, treatment would not be as effective or valuable time may be lost.

While a radiographer is usually a Diploma/Bachelor’s degree holder, the Radiologist has to qualify the MBBS degree and then specialise in Radiology at the MD level.

Applying on Net

Q I want to apply for a job online. Following some guidelines given in a book, I have formatted my resume attractively using good fonts, bullets etc. Can I send it as an attachment, otherwise all the formatting will be lost. What do you suggest?

Pooja Sharma

A You are right and wrong at the same time. E-mailed resumes DO look better when they get sent as attachments, but increasingly employers ask applicants not to send their resumes as attachments because of the danger of viruses. Many companies automatically delete all e-mail with attachments. So you may find that your beautiful resume never gets read.

Moreover, the recipient’s computer system may not have the decorative fonts you have used. As a result, your resume may look quite different when it is received. The fancy embellishments you have spent time creating may be deleted or even worse, become distorted, giving your resume a very unprofessional look.

Save your formatted print resume as a text-only document on your PC, then paste it into a message. Since e-mail resumes lack italics, bolding, and the like, you may, follow up with a hard copy.

Going commercial

Q I have developed a small dynamo- operated lamp which can be used for lighting up a room for 2-3 hours. Since I am a small town youth, I have no resources for commercially manufacturing or marketing the product. Is there any organisation from where I can get some help?

Jatinder Bhalla

A Jointly operated by the D/o Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and the D/o Science and Technology (DST), the Ministry of Science and Technology has a special Technopreneur Promotion Programme (TePP).

Prospects in poultry

Q I am a maize farmer and am planning to open a medium-sized hatchery. I feel I need to acquire some professional know-how but cannot spare too much time away from home. Could you please suggest some short-term course in poultry management in my region? Is there good scope in this field?

Balwinder Singh

A Growing at a smart 12-15 per cent p.a. in broiler and egg production, India is poised to emerge as a major global player in poultry.

With the lowest production costs in the world, we are presently the fourth largest producer of eggs and the eighth largest producer of poultry in the world. If the developed countries withdraw subsidies to their poultry farmers, we can emerge as the top player in the next few years. More advanced and systematic than the dairy and fisheries sectors, we have already mastered the technique of producing pathogen-free eggs. Even the bird flu which drastically affected the poultry sector globally, ended up benefiting us by opening up a global market for Indian chicken, exports which have crossed Rs 400 crore. Presently, we export poultry products like table eggs, egg powder, SPF hatching eggs, breeding stock and producing vaccine.

Contact the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, BB Ashram, Rampura-Rewari. The KVK offers training and demonstration of relevant technologies — both on-campus as well in the farmer’s fields. It also conducts vocational training for unemployed youth in piggery, fishery, poultry and dairy farming, cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants, fruit and vegetable preservation for income generation. It also assists farmers in aquiring quality raw material.

College of Veterinary Sc, Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar offers a Livestock Development Assistant course. The eligibility for this course has now been raised from matriculation to plus two.

BV Rao Instt of Poultry Mgt and Technology, Pune offers a 6-mth course in Poultry Mgt. Eligibility: plus two; Courses begin in Dec & June.

The Central Avian Research Institute (ICAR), Izatnagar , Bareilly (UP). This research and training institute in poultry science, offers the following short-term courses:

Poultry Nutrition and Feeding, Modern layer farm management; Modern broiler farm management Modern Quail/Turkey Production Mgt; Poultry Processing and Production management; and poultry disease control and Bio-security; and Modern Poultry Hatchery managment.

The eligibility for these 10-day courses is a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Sc/Agriculture/ AS/Biology with practical experience in poultry.
