Fashion design a hot favourite among students

Fashion designing is no longer a course restricted to a select few. A number of students are opting this course not just for the career options alone, but for the self-grooming as well. A survey conducted by Ludhiana Tribune in various professional institutions revealed that more and more girls were opting for the fashion designing as compared to previous years.

Among all other professional courses run by private colleges, institutes and polytechnics, fashion designing continue to attract majority of young girls. The new in the field, jewellery designing has also started picking up by elite class still the students prefer to join fashion designing for grooming their personality.

The National Institute of Fashion Designing, JD Institute for Fashion Designing, Pinacle Institute, Ivanna Institute of Designing etc are offering courses like fashion designing, jewellery designing, interior designing and knitwear designing. “Fashion designing witnessed huge rush every year. After learning basics in the course, students become creative. Young girls have become fashion savvy and the course is a platform to fulfill their dreams. Even if they do not opt it as a profession, the course makes them aware to be attractive and well- groomed in their day to day life. At present we have more than 150 students enrolled for the particular course”, said Ms Harpreet, a faculty member at NIFD here. The students can opt for a degree, diploma or certificate course for a fee of Rs 30,000 and Rs 25,000, respectively.

Mr Arvind Gupta, Center Director, said they had received many applications for the jewellery designing course, too. The course would be formally launched here tomorrow by Ms Sindura Gadde, Ms India World 2005.

Ms Pragati, Center Head, JD Institute of Fashion Designing, said a graph of students opting for professional courses was increasing with each passing year. She said fashion designing remained hot favourite among students. “Many students have shown inclination towards jewellery designing as it has become a lucrative business these days. Our students are working as designers in reputed jewellery shops here. Not only this, students have gone abroad to study the subject in detail”, said Ms Pragati. The six-months course costs around Rs 24,000.

Seeing the inclination towards the course, the Khalsa College for Women has recently started one year PG Diploma in Fashion Designing (affiliated to Panjab University). The course contents include illustration, CAD and industrial training. For the first batch of 2005-2006, the admissions have already started and the response has been tremendous, said one of the official.

New session begins in city colleges

Ludhiana, July 12
The new academic session of the DD Jain Memorial College for Women, Ludhiana, began here today. Mr Narinder Kumar Jain, president of the college managing committee inaugurated the session and also presided over the function. Mr Baldev Raj Jain, senior vice-president, and Mr Desh Bandhu along with other members of the managing committee were also present on the occasion.

The college principal, Dr Prem Singla, welcomed to the distinguished guests and students. Mr Jain in his presidential remarks paid rich tributes to Behn Devki Devi Jain in whose memory the college is named.

The current session of the Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women started with an auspicious note here today. Bhog ceremony of sehaj path was most reverently solemnised followed by elevating hymns from Gurbani. The Principal, Ms Madanjit Kaur Sahota, welcomed the new entrants and congratulated the students and staff for maintaining the glorious tradition of showing excellent results in the university exams. She dwelt in detail on the wide range of add-on-courses available in the college which will go in long way in developing income generating potential so essential to lead a dignified life as a productive citizen of country.

The new academic session of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, commenced with a prayer to the Almighty. Ms Manju Chawla, Principal of the college, addressed the students. She welcomed the new students and congratulated the old students for excelling in the annual examinations. She advised the students to work hard keeping their aims and objectives in their minds. Ms Amrit Sarna, wife of Prof Gurbir Singh Sarna, general secretary of the college governing body, gave away the prizes to the winners of Inter-Zonal Vaar Gayan competition —Amandeep, Daljeet and Mandeep on this occasion.

The new academic session of Ramgarhia Girls College, Miller Ganj, began with the college assembly. On this occasion, all students were extended a warm welcome by the Principal and the staff.

In her address to the students, the Principal, Ms Harmit Kaur, congratulated the students for their excellent performance in the previous session and expressed hope that journey of success should continue.

Competitions on World Population Day at DIET

On the occasion of World Population Day, five competitions of essay writing, painting, singing, quiz and declamation were conducted under the guidelines of the Population Education Cell, State Institute of Science Education, Punjab, Chandigarh, were held at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET).

Twentyfour students from six senior secondary schools participated. Each participant highlighted problems of population explosion, social evils, environment pollution, unemployment, female foeticide etc. Ms Kuldeep Kaur, Ms Gurwinder Kaur, Ms Sarbhjit Kaur, Ms Harbans Kaur, Ms Sukhdeep Kaur, Ms Paramjit Kaur and Ms Rajni Beri and Mr Avtar Singh, Mr B.K. Bhandari and Mr Oma Shanker acted as judges in these competitions.

In the essay writing competition, Manjot Kaur and Jaspreet Kaur of Sikh Girls Senior Secondary School and Vandana of Lajpat Rai Girls Senior Secondary School stood joint first and second, respectively. Harpreet Kaur of Sikh Girls Senior Secondary School got the third position in the on the spot painting competition. In the song contest, Jaskiran of Government Girls School, Pameeta and Manjot Kaur of Sikh Girls School stood first, second and third, respectively.

In the quiz competition, teams of Sikh Girls School, Government Girls School and Khalsa High School won first, second and third positions, respectively.

Mr Jagdish Lal, principal, DIET, Jagraon, gave away prizes to the winners.

City lawyer is law officer

A city lawyer has been included in the newly constituted team of law officers for the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Earlier, there were 102 law officers out of which only two were from Ludhiana. The government has faced criticism for such a jumbo team, causing a huge burden on the exchequer of the state.

City lawyer, Mr Eklavya Kumar, is the new face in the team. He has been appointed Assistant Advocate-General, Punjab. However, the name of Mr Bharat Bir Singh Sobti was not found in the new list of law officers. He was working as Additional Advocate-General, Punjab.

Hungama TV scouts for young talent

Hungama TV, a television channel for kids, is scouting for young talent in the city. The second “Hangama TV Captains Hunt” would pick up seven children to head the channel for the year 2005-06.

Ludhiana is one of the seven cities, including Mumbai and Delhi, from where the selection is being done. Last year, two children from Ludhiana were on the board of the channel, a company press note said.

The hunt culminates in September, when seven children between eight and 14 years would be part of the board of directors.

The company said it has introduced a new concept of school champion, wherein a student who influences the maximum number of his peers to participate in the hunt would automatically be eligible for a direct entry to city level auditions. Additionally, the seven winning children would be ‘Face of the Hungama TV’. They would get an opportunity to anchor shows on the channel, feature in various ground promotions and also play a part in deciding what should play on their channel, the company said.

The hunt would evaluate each child on various parameters like creativity, confidence, articulation, out-of-the-box thinking and teamwork.

The auditions would have three rounds, self-introduction, talent hunt and a mental puzzle, after which the final selection would be done.
