Awareness camp on AIDS

Chandigarh, June 27
A drug-de addiction camp, a puppet show and an awareness camp on HIV/AIDS at Colony No 5 was held today. It was organised by Yuvsatta in association with state AIDS Control Society with a team of doctors from Government Medical College, Sector 32.

Nearly 250 persons participated in the programme. Free literature on AIDS and condoms were distributed on the occasion.

Mr Ashwani Kumar, project in charge of Colony No 5 of Yuvsatta, delivered a talk on AIDS and exhorted the labourers and others to take precautions to fight against the deadly disease. Mr Parmod Sharma, Coordinator of Yuvsatta, released the fifth edition of Rakshak, AIDS awareness bulletin.

Chandigarh lads lift trophy

Mohali, June 27
Chandigarh prevailed over Amritsar to lift the trophy in the finals of Under 22 cricket tournament for F.C. Mittal Trophy played at PCA Stadium here today. The match was decided on the basis of higher run rate as the rain played the spoilsport during the second day of the match.

The second day’s play was called off due to overnight heavy rain. On the final day of the match today the first innings of Amritsar could not be completed due to late start of the play on account of early morning drizzle.

Resuming their innings from 5 for no loss, Amritsar could muster 234 for 5 in 78 overs today as Chandigarh bowlers bowled tidy line throughout the day.

The main scorers for Amritsar were left-handed opening batsman Munish Bhatia (72), Mayank Sharma (68 not out) and Baljit (39). For Chandigarh Asim Gupta took two wickets, while Bipul Sharma and Karanveer claimed one wicket each.

In the first innings, Chandigarh had made 377 for 9 with the help of fine centuries by Gaurav Gupta, who scored a brilliant 114 and Bipul Sharma who made an unbeaten 146 runs.

Brig. (Retd.) G.S. Sandhu, CEO PCA, gave away the winners trophy and a cash prize of Rs.30,000/- to the winners.

Brief Score : Chandigarh 377 for 9 in 90 overs.

Amritsar 234 for 5 in 78 overs (Munish Bhatia 72, Mayank Sharma 68*, Baljit 39, Asim Gupta 2 for 71, Bipul Sharma 1 for 69, Karanveer 1 for 56).

Nonie storms into semifinals

Nonie Sidhu, a student of Yadavindra Public School, Patiala displayed her prowess and made her way to the semi-finals of the girls under-12 section of the CLTA Open Hot Weather Tennis Tournament being played at the Tennis Stadium, Sector 10 here. Nonie also won her tie in under 14 section by beating Ramneek Kaur.
