Sale of cheap drugs: Health Ministry criticised
Tribune New Service

Chandigarh, June 11
The Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee has lamented the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s failure to take cognizance of supply of cheap and substandard medicines to thousands of beneficiaries under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) at the CGHS dispensary, Sector 45, here.

Thousands of Central Government employees and retirees avail of the CGHS facility at the dispensary.

The irregularity had been pointed out by a sub-committee, constituted under the coordination committee to asses the functioning of the dispensary.

The sub-committee had pointed out that medicines prescribed by the doctor were not available at the dispensary and that patients had to pay repeated visits to the dispensary to get the medicines.

Other complaints regarding indifferent attitude of the staff keep pouring in before the members of coordination committee.

The findings of the sub-committee were also sent to the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare stating that the “coverage of the CGHS should be restricted to the pensioners till it accomplishes full infrastructure in terms to adequate staff and dispensaries”.

Headed by Mr L.K. Puri, Chief Post Master General, Punjab Circle, the committee had demanded that the patients be allowed to avail of medical facilities directly from the PGI and other government-run hospitals. Also, the amount of medicines purchased from the open market be reimbursed on the Delhi pattern.

Demanding the provision of additional facilities at the dispensary, it was pointed out that the alternative systems of medicines should also be included in the CGHS panel.

SAI office to be shifted to Sonepat
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, June 12
Chandigarh has got better sports facilities as compared to various other big cities. Keeping this in mind the Union Government had set up a Regional Office of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in 1980s here. The aim of this centre, named Netaji Subhas Northern Regional Centre, was to have better coordination among coaches, players and different sports departments for effective working and implementation of various sports schemes.

But politics is likely to cripple the functioning of the centre, which is now being shifted to a remote place in Sonepat district, much to the displeasure of its employees.

The Chandigarh centre was carved out from the National Institute of Sports, Patiala, and in the past two decades there have been frequent changes and transfers, asked by various in charges of the centre, thus creating crisis in its working.

Most of the officers, who were of the rank of Director, never wanted to stay in Chandigarh as their families used to reside in Delhi. Two years back, Mr K.R. Singh, who was also sent for a few months as the Director of the centre, mooted a proposal with the then Chautala government for a piece of land for the SAI office in Sonepat district, so as to remain closer to Delhi.

As a result, the Corporate Office of the SAI has finally decided to shift the Regional Office from Chandigarh to Sonepat by June 30. What is more surprising is that even the centre has been renamed as Tau Devi Lal Northern Centre as the proposal was accepted during the tenure of the Chautala government.

Even the local member of Parliament, Mr Pawan Bansal, had asked the then Union Sports Minister Sunil Dutt for keeping the office in Chandigarh as this caters to all the Northern states and the city is the hub of sports activity in the region.

A public interest litigation (PIL) was also filed last week by Mr H.S. Lucky, a lawyer, which demanded to put off the decision of the SAI Corporate Office to shift the centre. Mr Lucky has given seven-day time, after which the matter will be taken in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

One of the senior coaches said even there was proposal to shift and merge the Bhiwani centre with the Sonepat centre, but that decision had been stalled at the initiative of Ms Kiran Chaudhary, MLA from Tosham. Another senior coach said the absence of a full fledged Union Sports Minister after the death of Sunil Dutt was also one of the reasons why the SAI Corporate office was in a hurry to implement the decision in order to favour a few of its officials.

Interestingly, only a few days back, Mr Suresh Harmilapi was appointed the new Regional Director of the Sonepat centre. The same officer had earlier served at the Chandigarh office but had sought transfer to Delhi. The SAI Northern Regional Office caters to five states/UT — Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.

Another sports official said to derive best from a sportsperson, one needs a soothing environment and the Sonepat centre sans this.

Nutrition vital for sportspersons: expert
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, June 12
Nutrition plays an important role in everyone’s life, including a sportsperson. But for any sports prodigy to grow in right direction, the diet is considered to be an important component. A budding sportsperson in its initial years need guidance from various sources such as school principals, coaches, parents. Whether you are a serious athlete, wanting to compete locally or internationally, or individual eager to improve one’s overall level of fitness, nutrition plays an important role. Whenever coaching camps are held or teams sent abroad, surprisingly no nutrition expert is attached.

When asked a few of the local people associated with sports gave their opinion on nutrition. Ms Bandhana Bhaika, fitness freak who runs a gym-cum-health management centre in Sector 34 says, they guide and counsel sportspersons who come to them for preparing diet plans. She says the personal trainers also help individuals manage the diet which is rich in nutritional value. She said unfortunately sports nutrition is not high on one’s list, but it is the need of the hour. Ms Bhaika said taking sugar before any tournament to store energy was a myth. In fact, eating too much sugar immediately before or during exercise can increase the risk of gastrointestinal problems, such as cramps, nausea, diarrhoea.

Sabeeha Dhillon, an international rifle shooter, said all these years when she took to this sport, no body guided her in this field. She said it was her mother Ms Agnese who made her schedule for do’s and don’ts of food. She said as she was purely vegetarian, sometimes it was a surprise for many of her fellow players, but that did not deter her from having strict and managed diet. But she said one was not always ready access to sports dietician due to the lack of time. Sabeeha, a law student at Panjab University, said she was of the view that there should be diet counsellers when they play and also government should take the services of nutrition experts to accord priority to this sector. She said good nutrition can give any athlete the winning edge.

Mr Sanjay Sardana, Principal, Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, Chandigarh said coaches need to be educated on nutritional front. He said but now a days, the school-going children who come for practice are quite aware of nutritional facts and guided by parents and coaches, they do carry along food items, glucose, lemon water during scorching heat. He said the school also plays a vital role in giving proper diet guidance to its sportspersons.
