Create awareness, AIDS Control Society told

Chandigarh, June 6
The city’s State AIDS Control Society has become the first society in the northern region to complete its sentinel surveillance to detect HIV among the high- risk group consisting of female sex workers, injecting drug users and homosexuals.

This was informed by the Secretary Health-cum-Chairman, State AIDS Control Society, Mr Krishna Mohan, at a meeting which was attended by Director, Health Services, Mr C.P. Bansal, and the Project Director, State AIDS Control Society, Mr N.M. Sharma.

It was further informed that to know the strength of the high-risk behaviour population an intervention programme would be chalked out to prevent the spread of HIV infection in the population that practice high-risk behaviours.

The society has completed a mapping of these high-risk groups as well as high risk sites in collaboration with the Indian Public Health Association, PGI.

The Home Secretary said that the information collected through the surveillance would help in the prevention of the dreaded disease, adding that it was imperative to disseminate the same so that it percolates down to the general public who could adopt preventive measures. He directed the society to focus its attention more on creating awareness to prevent the further spread of this disease.

Mr Krishna Mohan also urged the people to utilise the services provided by the State AIDS Control Society, which include Voluntary Counselling and Testing Facilities, Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission Programme, Drugs for Anti-Retroviral Therapy and Community Care Centres.

He stressed that the public should avail of counselling and testing facilities for high-risk behaviour or in the case of doubt at P.G.I, General Hospital, Sector-16 and Government Medical College, Sector-32, Chandigarh.

He said that all the ante-natal mothers must get themselves tested before delivery for HIV for the safety of child and if found positive must take drugs and also provide drugs to the newborn. In addition, an effort to provide some relief to the poor patients, anti-retro viral therapy is also being provided to AIDS patients free of cost in PGI, Chandigarh. Now community care centre at Khuda Alisher is also functional and HIV/AIDS patients may avail the facility of short stay in it.

ICLCL XI win by 10 wickets

ICL Certifications Limited XI are emerging as dark horses of the tournament after stunning Chetan Sharma Cricket Academy of Delhi by 10 wickets in the semifinal of the Chetan Sports Foundation (Under-14) Cricket Tournament at the Sector 16 cricket stadium here today.

Their rivals in the final tomorrow will be Sonnet Club of Delhi who pipped strong contenders DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, on the spin of coin after their semifinal ended in a tie at the DAV Senior Secondary School Ground in Sector 8.

Chetan Academy batted first and made 104 in 28.3 overs with Sahil and Tarun contributing 31 and 20 runs, respectively. Jeevanjot claimed three wickets for 16 runs. ICLCL XI achieved their target with the loss of their opener Vipul Chadha (30) by scoring 105 in 13 overs. Jeevanjot and Manan Vohra remained not out on 25 runs each.

Earlier, DAVSSS-8 had scored the same total in 33.4 overs after winning the toss and batting first. Captain Anil Sihag scored a captain’s knock of 63 with the help of seven fours. As the match ended in an interesting tie, spin of coin sealed the fate of DAVSSS-8 as Sonnet Club skipper Shaqib Alam called it correct.

Seeded players advance

All seeded players got through to the next round with ease in the first round matches of boys and girls under-14, under-18 in the AITA Talent Series Tournament at St Peter’s School, Sector 37, here today.

The only exception was third seeded Gursimran Brar of Chandigarh, who lost to Varun Sharma, the unseeded player, in boys under-18 match. As many as eight states and one player from Sri Lanka are participating.

Amritsar score 246

With the help of a fine knock of 95 by Sumit Sharma, Amritsar scored 246 in 73.5 overs on the first day of the three-day Punjab State Inter-District (Under-19) Tournament for Dhruv Pandove Trophy at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium here today.

Amritsar won the toss and elected to bat first. Sumit (95), Rahul (42) and Karan (41) were the main scorers for Amritsar. Amrinder and Taruwar claimed three wickets each for Amritsar while Vikramjeet took two for 39.

In reply Jalandhar was batting on 61 for 2 in 18.1 overs at close of the play. Satpal made 29 runs and Ishan Dogra put on 26 for Jalandhar. Charanjit and Baljinder took one wicket each.

CLSA win by 22 runs

Fine performance by Vineet Soni (67) and Sanjeev Trikha (48 runs and 3 for 16) enabled Chandigarh Lawyers Sports Association (CLSA) to beat Prestige Honda XI by 22 runs and enter the final of the 2nd ICL Certification Cup Inter-Institutional Cricket Tournament at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Barwala here today.

In the second semifinal ICLCL routed Tanush Textiles XI by five wickets.

Steps to sensitise police officers

Chandigarh, June 6
The Chandigarh Administration has decided to appoint the Home Secretary, Mr Krishna Mohan, as designated authority to effectively implement the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 as amended in 2004. The Home Secretary will also take steps to sensitise police officers and all other concerned about the proper and transparent implementation of the act.

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment ordinance 2004 has been promulgated and passed by both Houses of Parliament and has been assented to by the President.
