Power trip

The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, while dedicating to the nation the 1500 mw Naptha Jhakri Hydroelectrical Project in Himachal Pradesh, stated that free power is an obstacle in the development of the nation.

But Dr Sahib should realise that free power to the farmers has certainly two benefits. First, the promise to give free power to the farmers during the elections fetches more votes for the politicians. Second, the boards have an excellent excuse for covering up their overall inefficiency. "Bhai kaya Karen, free bijli ki vajeh se bijli board ka satyanas ho gaya hai."

After reading about the PM’s statement, a 16-year-old son of an industrialist asked his father, "Papa, why do we have to steal electricity for our factory if free electricity is not good for the development of the nation?"

The father clarified embarrassingly "Bewakoof, we use chori ki bijli in our plant whereas the Prime Minister is talking about free power." The son again asked, "By free electricity, you mean the lightning from the sky?"

The father tried to explain him that by free power the government meant the power which was officially supplied free of cost. "Supplying free power to the farmers will put the electricity boards further in losses."

The son asked, "Papa, how’s that the power we steal in our factory is not harmful for the electricity board." To this, the father replied the theft of power was healthy for many employees and officers of the board. When the son asked the reason, the father said, "Because we steal electricity in partnership with them."
