Logically, with the arrival of reality shows, TV viewing should have become more qualitative. However, lately, these shows are making sure the idiot box lives up to its name. Pepsi Champions, the new talent hunt on Channel V, has contestants vying for viewer eyeballs with a 60-second live performance with leggy model-turned-VJ Pia Trivedi goading the participants on. No, she defends: the show isn’t a no-brainer. We deliberately didn’t want to limit the scope of a talent hunt to singing and dancing. It’s all about being wild, wacky, creative and innovative at the same time. To become a ‘champion’ and win an all-expense paid backpack trip to Europe, a participant merely needs to hold viewer attention for a minute any way one can. In an era where reality shows are a dime a dozen, one wonders whether Pepsi Champions will be able to make a mark. But those viewers who find nothing to hold their attention can always gaze at the stunning Pia. Parental misguidance
For all those parents grappling with the trauma of rearing unmanageable kids, Yes Dear on Star World on Mondays, 9 pm, might have a few helpful (or not so helpful) hints. A comedy about two couples and their outrageously contrasting views on parenting the show is a highly amusing perspective on different ways of bringing up children. While Kim is a neurotic, stay-at-home mother, who wants a perfect family, her sister Christine is a down-to-earth mom of two who believes that life can never be perfect. The joys of parenthood are tempered by the unexpected hilarity of bringing up baby brats. The series starts with the episode Spanks, But No Spanks when Christine decides to try the spanking method on her lying son much to the shock of sister Kim. Slated as one of the top six most watched shows in America, Yes Dear’s holy mantra is Being Parents’ is a Fool Time Job. Watch this serial and you’ll soon be perishing the thought that parenting is a fun job. Sinking sands
A couple of years ago, when he was selected to host Crime Patrol on Sony, it was seen as a cool debut for Diwakar Pundir. But he was shunted out as fast as he had stormed in. Soon after, he had another career mishap when he did a thoroughly forgettable cameo in King of Bollywood. Most people felt Pundir’s career had gone kaput. But now the former Gladrags Mr India and commercial pilot is back, and back with style. He plays a self-seeking lawyer in Zee TV’s Reth. The role was first offered to Sanjit Bedi who turned it down due to date problems. Pundir doesn’t mind being the second choice as he feels it’s just tailor-made for him. But the excitement in his voice quickly evaporates when he’s asked about his long sabbatical. His answer is an unconvincing "I was looking for good roles." Considering four of his films are still on hold, Pundir has that sinking feeling that he’ll have to make this show a big hit. If he can’t then it’ll be the classic case of another star biting the Reth — NF |
