Stress on quality education in govt schools

“Teachers must nurture creativity amongst students and mobilise community participation to bring about quality education in government schools,” advised Usha Sidhu while addressing gatherings at teachers training programmes at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bharat Nagar, and other centres in the city today.

Ms Sidhu said value education, girl education, education for children with special needs and environmental education had become significant components of the existing education system.

She also said the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) was making serious efforts to improve the standard of education in government schools as well as to provide infrastructure and other amenities to school.

The SCERT had adopted new teaching modules to involve the interest of teachers and generate enthusiasm amongst students for respective subjects.

She said around 3,000 teachers would get training in the first schedule till June 6, and another 2,000 teachers would get training in the second batch between June 7 and June 30.

Meanwhile, block resource persons Pushpinder Kaur and Gurmeet Kaur Chhima (both lecturers) delivered lectures on “Team Spirit, Group Activities” and “School Readiness” at a teachers’ training programme at Government Model Senior Secondary School, PAU campus, here today.

Group leader Varinder Kaur and school Principal Gurdeep Kaur also spoke on various teaching modules.

Teachers participated in group discussions and debates on various topics.

Protest against holding seminars

Malaudh (Ahmedgarh), May 22
Activists of various social, trade and political organisations today marched through the streets of the town in protest against the alleged decision of the authorities in the Education Department to force teachers to attend daylong seminars in scorching heat that claimed the life of a teacher at Government High School here on Saturday. They demanded immediate suspension of the ongoing seminar.

Addressing the gathering at the starting point of the march, leaders of the of Government Teachers Union, Democratic Teachers Front, SCBC Teachers Union, Panjab Pardesh Teachers Union and Adhyapak Dal alleged that Harjit Singh, teacher of Government Middle School, Sohian, and resident of Seehan Daud village, died yesterday as he was forced to attend the seminar despite his bad health.

“Though he had requested the authorities to allow him a leave, he was not allowed to go home. Not bearing the scorching heat he became unconscious in the hall and later collapsed in a private hospital at Ludhiana,” said the leaders.

The leaders alleged that adequate medical treatment was not provided to the teacher. He was first taken to Civil Hospital here and later shifted to Ludhiana.

While marching through the local town, the protesters raised slogan against the state government. They demanded immediate suspension of the ongoing of seminars and camps. They demanded compensation for the family of the deceased.

Mr Sikander Singh Cheema (GTU), Mr Bhajan Singh and Mr Joginder Singh (DTF), Dr Karnail Singh (SCBC Teachers Union), Mr Bahadur Singh Madnipur (PPTU) and Mr Sukhdev Rana (Adhyapak Dal) spoke on the occasion.

The deceased Mr Harjit Singh (47) was working as an elementary teacher at Sohian School. He is survived by his wife and two children. A large number of persons attended his funeral at his native village today.

PU team visits Arya College

A Panjab University inspection team from Chandigarh headed by Prof Devinder Singh, Dean, Faculty Languages, Department of Correspondence Studies, Principal H.S. Gosal, GN College, Narangwal, Prof Santosh Gupta, Department of Evening Studies, PU, Prof S.C. Vaidya, University Business School, PU, Prof Satish Kapoor, and Principal Prabhjot Kaur Government College for Women, Ludhiana, as nominee of the DPI (College), Punjab, visited Arya College for granting affiliation to it to start MA Punjabi and add-on-courses like fashion designing, early childhood care and education, foreign trade practices and procedure, insurance business, computer-based accounting advertising and sales management, functional English. The inspection team visited the college library, college campus and interacted with the faculty members.

Dr S.M. Sharma, Principal, Arya College, informed that admission to MA Punjabi Part I and add-on-courses would be made with effect from July 2005 subject to the approval by the university.

Tiny tots exhibit summer dresses

Students of GNI Public School participated in modelling contest. Modelling of summer wear was held in the school here yesterday. Kids of the pre-primary wing were seen in their best summer dresses.

Summer prince and princess were chosen from each class. These were: Gurnoor Singh Dhaliwal and Sargunjot Kaur (Nursery), Chiranjiv Kaura and Avneet Kaur (L.K.G.), Abhijot Singh and Inderdeep Kaur (U.K.G.), Tej Anhad and Jasleen Kaur (Std. I), Sangat Ren Singh, Sukham and Saachi (std. II).

Function: Ryan International School, Ludhiana, celebrated the graduation ceremony of Montessori. The cultural programme staged by graduates was a sight to behold. Dr. Navad Aslam, Chief Cardiologist, DMC, Mr Arun Thamman, Excise and Taxation Officer, Mr Ramesh Joshi, Director, Punjab Pollutions Control Board were among those who were present on the occasion.

The main attraction of the evening was ramp modelling by students who dressed up as doctors, engineers, media, defence personnel etc.

Ms Jaishree, Principal, said the students were also given prizes for excellence in various fields.

Guidance lecture: “Mein te Mera Safar” a programme which was organised to bring out the latent talent of students of Spring Dew Senior Secondary School, Jagraon, here yesterday. Jaycee’s national trainer, Mahesh Kumar taught the students different ways to achieve goals.

Addressing the students, he said each child must recognise his own talents, shortcomings and positive points. Present on the occasion were Dr Satish Sharma, Principal of Lajpat Rai DAV College, Jagraon, Mr Satish Kalra Director of the school, and Ms Anita Kalra principal.

RGC students excel in BCA exams

Ludhiana, May 22
The Department of Computer Science and Applications of Ramgarhia Girls College got 100 per cent result in BCA II year examination conducted by Panjab University, Chandigarh. All students passed with first division and as many as eight students got above 70 per cent marks.

Parampreet Kaur got seventh position in the university, first and in the college securing 79.5 per cent marks, Mamta Rani stood tenth in the university and second in the college securing 77.6 per cent marks and Simranjeet Kaur stood third in the college securing 76.4 per cent marks.

Turban tying competition

A turban tying competition was organised jointly by Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle and Gurdwara Sri Singh Sabha Model Gram in its premises here today. Additional Zonal Secretary of Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle (GGSSC) said that more than 200 students from 30 schools participated in this contest.

The students were divided into two age groups — below 15 years and above 15 years. Mr Jajjhar Singh, Director of Dastar Bandi Institute of Ludhiana, supervised the competition. Mr Amarjeet Singh, Mr Parmeet Singh and Mr Japmeet Singh were the judges of the competition. The Kanth Path was organised by the GGSSC on May 21 and 22.

PRSPC to honour players, promoters on June 25

The Punjab Rural Sports Promotion Council (PRSPC), under whose banner more than five dozen rural sports clubs had gathered two weeks ago to promote games in Punjab, held a meeting at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. All office-bearers of the PRSPC attended the meeting, presided over by its chairman, Mr Ramesh Singla, to finalise the date of the felicitaion function during which one male and one female player each along with one sports promoter of various games in the state would be honoured. The winners would be given Rs 25,000 and a citation.

The meeting resolved to organise the function on June 25 at the local Guru Nanak Bhawan. It also formed a five-member selection panel, which will decide the winners of the award being started in the memory of Amarjit Singh Grewal. The panel members are Mr Prithipal Singh Batala, Mr Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, Mr Devi Dyal, Mr Amarjit Singh Thind and Mr Kanwaljit Singh Shankar.

Prof Kanwaljit Singh, spokesperson for the council informed that the panel had shortlisted the names from which this year’s awardees would be selected. The names of the nominees for the award are (male players)- Prabhjot Singh (hockey), Talwinder Singh (basketball), Hardeep Singh Saini (football), Manpreet Singh Mana (kabaddi) and Amritpal Singh (athletics).

Female players nominees are — Manpreet Kaur, Harwant Kaur and Rajwinder Kaur (athletics), Kamaljeet Kaur (basketball), Gurpreet Kaur Purewal (handball) and Rajvinder Kaur (volleyball). The shortlisted sports promoters are Mr Jaswant Singh Kanwal, writer, Mr Jagtar Singh, gymnastics coach, Mr Baldev Singh, former national hockey coach, Mr Prabhjot Singh, Chief of Bureau, The Tribune, and Mr Amarjit Singh Kahlon, athletics coach.

Mr Navjot Singh Sidhu, former cricketer and member of Parliament, Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, ADGP, Punjab and president of the Basketball Federation of India, would be the chief guests on June 25, Prof Kanwaljit Singh said.

Prof Kanwaljit Singh said the Canada Kabaddi Cup, Kebe Club, Lalton Kalan Club, Gill Club, Jarkhar Club, Gujjarwal Club, Kotla Sahian Club of Batala, Nat Club of Ghaloti, Nimma Kabaddi Club of Khanna, Theerkey Club, Nabha Kabaddi Club, Katani Kalan, Dhandra Club and Udhonangal Club have collected more than Rs 1.5 lakh for the function to be held on June 25. To review the preparations being made for this function a meeting of the council would be held here on June 11, he said.

Batra guides MC Club to victory

Ludhiana, May 22
Harmit Batra excelled with bat and ball (44 runs and 2 for 13) and guided the Municiapal Corporation Club to register 5-wicket victory over the Youth Cricket Club in an exhibition cricket match played at the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College grounds here today.

Batting first, the Youth Cricket Club made 96 runs in 24 overs. Only two batsmen, Bharat (150 and Punit (17) could reach double figure. The main wicket takers for Municipal Corporation Club were Deepak and Sunny who claimed three wickets each while Harmit Batra and Rajesh Gandhi took two wickets each.

The Municipal Corporation Club achieved the target in the 16th overs after losing five wickets. Harmit Batra and Sudhir contributed 44 and 21 runs in their team’s total of 97 runs. Kamal of the Youth Cricket Club grabbed two wickets conceding 22 runs.

DSO bereaved

Ludhiana, May 22
Mr Sada Lal Lotey, father of District Sports Officer, (DSO), Ludhiana, Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, died here yesterday. He was 89. He is survived by four sons and three daughters. His cremation was held at Civil Lines cremation grounds. It was attended by a large number of people, including prominent social figures of the area, industrialists, players, sports promoters and office-bearers of a number of sports associations.
