City ideal for honing weightlifting skills
Chandigarh, May 22 To meet the needs of local weightlifters, the city has three training centers. These are located at Sector 42, Panjab University and Mohali. The Sector 42 centre is run by the Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration, whereas the Chandigarh Amateur Weightlifting Association is patronising the Public Sports Club at Sector 66 in Mohali. Besides weightlifting, these centres also provide infrastructure for bodybuilding and power lifting. Offering all kinds of facilities, these training centres have more than 125 lifters. The number is expected to rise after the colleges and the universities re-open. On enquiring about the demands and requirements to better the standard of the game, coaches and officials associated with the sport expressed satisfaction with the paraphernalia provided at these centres. “Working under the aegis of the Department of Sports, the university training centre offers modern equipment besides a fitness centre and weight training for all games. The centre has a separate hall for women trainees. It has special sets designed for women”, said KDS Nagra, Coordinator of Punjab and Chief Coach of the Sports Authority of India. Pratima Kumari and Sana Macha Channu, Olympians involved in the doping controversy in Athens in 2004, received training at the centre two years ago and created new records in the three disciplines of the game at the national level after the intensive coaching sessions they received here, Nagra said. Nagra has specialised in weightlifting and weight training for different games and has done Master’s in Sports from Germany. Appreciating the efforts being put in by the Sports Department, Chandigarh, Administration, to raise the standards of the game, Amrik Singh, SAI coach, at the Training Centre, Sector 42, said, “The department is doing well to promote the sport and fulfil all demands made by us from time to time. We have three platforms with reinforcement systems for training 25 to 30 lifters. This includes five women”. Amrik Singh believes the team is doing a good job at the centre and has been winning the Chandigarh State Weightlifting Championship since 1991 besides winning the Women Weightlifting and Powerlifting Championship since 1997 continuously. In the National Championship at Vishakhapatnam in 1993, J.S. Pearson won a bronze medal. Pearson also won a silver in the inter-state championship. In the junior nationals, Manwar Singh from the centre won a silver medal at a meet held at Patiala. Inderpal won a silver medal at the National Games held at Patiala in 2001-02 as well as at the Senior National Games at Bhilai in 2002. In the Girls’ category, Jagdeep Bawa bagged a silver medal and Deepika won bronze medals in the All-India Inter-University Championship at Vishakhapatnam in 2004-05. Most women shy away from weightlifting, maintains Amrik Singh, “Being a tough and power-packed game, very few girls take to it. They have the potential to produce great results at international level provided they continue to train. But most of the girls, who take up this sport, quit immediately after completing their studies”, he added. To encourage lifters doing well at various state and national meets, the Sports Department is providing them with incentives to perform better - Wing seats at coaching centers, which include Rs 50 per day for their diet for the year and a concession in their academic fees. |
