CFA & CPA courses Q Are the CFA and CPA programmes offered by the ICFAI, Hyderabad, internationally recognised. Are these programmes affiliated with the American institutes that offer these certifications? — Gurpreet Kaur A The MS (Finance) programme (leading to the CFA Charter from the Council of Chartered Financial Analysts) offered by ICFAI University in India is different in design, structure, scope, content and examinations from the CFA programme offered by the CFA Institute, USA. The two institutions are independent of each other; and have no reciprocal arrangements. Due to certain trademark restrictions, the CFA designation conferred by the CCFA, India, cannot be used in USA and Canada. For details, check their website: www.cfainstitute.org Similarly, the CPA programme of ICFAI University is totally different from the CPA programme of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), USA (www.aicpa.org), or that offered by other CPA Institutes in other countries. Thus, ICFAI's CFA and CPA programmes are not affiliated to the corresponding US institutes and are unlikely to be recognised globally. Personnel programme Q I am a first year B. Com student. I would like to do a diploma in personnel management either on a part-time basis or through correspondence. — Maninder A All diplomas in personnel management are offered at the postgraduate level, so you will have to wait till you complete your final year of B.Com. The eligibility for most of these courses is a basic bachelor's degree. However, correspondence courses are essentially meant for those who need to supplement their work experience with formal qualifications. Since you have time on your side, you should preferably go for a regular MBA or related PG course instead. Typically, you will be inducted as a management trainee and would start off as an executive or assistant manager in a business organisation, manufacturing company, export or trading house, financial concern, bank, NGO, PSU or MNC. Engineer the right planQ I will be taking the AIEEE this year. Kindly tell me something about the various branches of engineering. What should I do if I don't get the branch of my choice? — Harjinder Singh A I have often noticed that the interest and aptitude of students who opt for a particular branch of engineering has no obvious relationship with the courses they land up with. This is mainly due to two reasons: Lack of proper information and guidance about what each field is all about and its scope in the long term. And even more commonly, the student ends up taking whatever branch is available in the pecking order due to the limitation of seats in some of the popular branches like computer science or electronics and communication. The present system of technical education in India (unlike its American counterpart, which offers multiple entry-points and amazing flexibility) for instance, is a rather straight-jacketed one, with more or less a single entry point and a rigid course structure. This being the case, I would advice you to gather as much info as possible about the various fields and talk to some practicing engineers, so that you end up making an informed choice. The AICTE has approved 32 courses in engineering and technology at the undergraduate degree level (check out the list on www.aicte.ernet.in). And don't fall for courses with exotic new-fangled nomenclature — like the ones flaunted by some of the private universities in Chhattisgarh which have been derecognised by the Supreme Court like "Master of Biotechnology Administration" and "B. Sc with Automobile Sc"! In case you don't get the field of your choice, plumb for the next best one (if you're not prepared to take another shot at the exams next year). The good news is that you have good chances of upgrading to a more 'desirable' field at the M. Tech level in many cases. Another option would be to top your engineering degree with a top-of-the-line MBA. A techno-management qualification is always in demand.
