Salman gets Lucky

Salman Khan’s Lucky— No Time For Love, set in majestic St. Petersburg, has hit the screen. Vickey Lalwani caught up with the actor

Tell us about Lucky- No Time For Love

It’s about a 12th standard girl in love with a man who is quite older than her.

What made you sign ‘Lucky’, considering directors Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao were relatively new?

The script convinced me. It’s a universal love story about two people trapped in a situation and caught unawares by unexpected insurgency in St Petersburg, and how they try to flee to safety. They discover that love can creep in, but there’s no time for it.

Did you think twice before acting with a new director?

Not really. I just couldn’t refuse. Vinay and Radhika had worked for almost two years on the script. They came out very well-planned. They are in absolute sync with each other.

Who gets lucky in the film?

Actually, the heroine Sneha Ullal is called Lucky in the film. She comes into my life on a day when everything has been unlucky for me.

Do you rate Sneha as a fair actress?

Fair? She is mind-blowing in the film. ‘Lucky- No Time For Love’ belongs to Sneha Ullal. She is a cool girl from a good family. I think she has a very bright future.

A lot of the shooting took place in Russia?

Right. Grrr! The temperatures were so low. Please don’t remind me.. A never before kind of experience. It took very long to shoot there.

Back to Sneha. It is rumoured that you signed Sneha Ullal (for Lucky) because she looks like your former girlfriend Aishwarya Rai.

That’s not true and it’s very unfair to make comparisons like this. We were looking out for someone and my sister Arpita told us there was a girl she had seen in her college who fitted the bill.

What prompted your patch-up with Shah Rukh Khan?

I didn’t even know Shah Rukh and I had a problem till I read about it. And if I hugged him at Farah’s (Khan) place, it was because I felt like it; it was an impulse. I do things on impulse. I hardly think there was ever any problem between us that caused a big rift. It was just that Shah Rukh was busy doing his own stuff and I was busy doing mine and we had drifted apart.

What are the new films you are doing?

There’s Raj Kumar Santoshi’s next with Ajay Devgan, Rumi Jaffrey’s film, Sooraj (Barjatya) is writing a script and then Sanjay’s (Leela Bhansali) project. — TWF
