Action plan against foeticide set in motion

Chandigarh, April 11
Followed by the launch of an action plan encompassing initiatives to check the declining sex ratio in Chandigarh by UT Administrator, Gen. S.F. Rodrigues (retd), Home Secretary-cum-Secretary Social Welfare, Krishna Mohan held a meeting with officers of the departments concerned today for the implementation of the plan.

The Social Welfare Department will be the nodal department for implementing the action plan.

A shelter home for women shall be set up in Block-Il of Nari Niketan.

A special helpline for women would be set up in the shelter home.

A legal cell shall be established in association with NGOs and the State Legal Services Authority for women who want their rights to protect the female foetus.

To confront the menace of dowry, the police would be organising a workshop on the Prohibition of Dowry Act, 1961, to sensitize the police force for the effective implementation of the Act.

200 units of blood donated

Over 200 units of blood were donated by students and staff of the Chandigarh College of Engineering & Technology, Sector 26, here today. The Home Secretary, Mr Krishna Mohan, inaugurated the blood donation camp. Students from various streams (community development programme, part-time diploma & regular diploma stream and degree stream) donated blood.

The Principal, Dr Baljeet S. Kapoor, also donated blood. The camp was held in collaboration with the Rotary Chandigarh Centre & the State Bank of Patiala.

35 donate blood

As many as 35 persons donated blood at a camp organised by the Medical Squadron of 12 Wing at the Air Force station in collaboration with the Blood Department of the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, here today.

The camp was conducted by a team of doctors from the hospital led by Dr Ravneet Kaur. It was inaugurated by president of the Air Force Wives’ Welfare Association (local), Mrs Hema Venugopal, who was the first person to donate blood at the camp.

Engineering college sports meet

Mohali, April 11
Shaheed Udham Singh College of Engineering and Technology (SUSCET), Tangori organised its annual athletics and sports meet last week. According to a press note issued by the college authorities here today, Mr J.S. Sidhu, Chairman SUSCET was the chief guest.

Mr Gurlabh Singh and Mr Sukhwinder Singh, members of management committee were also present at the function. Prof. S.K. Girdhar, Principal, SUSCET, accorded a warm welcome to the chief guest and requested him, to declare the meet open. Mr J.S. Sidhu, spoke a few words of advice to the students and declared the meet open.

The students participated in various field and track events, with great enthusiasm. Ms Ramandeep Kaur and Ms Pravneet Kaur Sidhu were adjudged the best women athletes while Mr Prem Pandey was adjudged the best athlete in the men category.

Mr Gurlabh Singh, general secretary, SUSCET distributed prizes to the winners of various events. Mr Rajandeep S Chahal, Mr Chattar Partap Singh Sohi, and Harjinder Pal were conferred special merit certificates in recognition of their representing Punjab Technical University, in the All-India Inter University Fencing tournament and winning a bronze medal. The overall winners trophy was bagged by students of the computer science and engineering discipline. The function concluded, with a vote of thanks by Prof. A.S. Bajwa, president sports SUSCET

Ikttesh, Mandeep move ahead in TT meet

Ikttesh Chahal of Chandigarh won the first round of the under-14 girls’ singles event against Mrignaini, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the All-India Tennis Association Talent Series Tournament at the Lake Club, Sector 6, here today. In the boys’ under-14 category, Mandeep Gill beat Naveen, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round. The tournament, which is being organised in association with the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, will continue till April 17.

Mr I.S. Sandhu, Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-Director Sports, inaugurated the tournament.

Minerva Academy, JJ Sports in next round

Minerva Academy thrashed Cricket Coaching Centre by 85 runs in the first round match of the 4th Youth Cricket Tournament at Kishangarh here today.

In another match of the day, J.J. Sports beat Manjeet XI by 12 runs to qualify for the next round. The tournament is being organised by the Youth Club, Kishangarh. Brief scores 1: Minerva Academy 175 for 8 in 20 overs.

Cricket Coaching Centre Sector 16 90 all out in 11.4 overs.

2. JJ Sports 141 for 7 in 20 overs. Manjeet XI 130 for 7 in 20 overs.
