NRI groom nabbed for marriage fraud

The local police has nabbed four members of a gang, that had been duping innocent persons on the pretext of getting young girls married to NRIs. The main accused, an NRI in his 50s, had married a teenaged girl from Amritsar after allegedly deserting his two wives.

Confusion persists over VAT implementation

Agitation by BSNL workers enters third day

The indefinite dharna, chain hunger strike and work-to-rule agitation by the executives of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) here entered the third day with the authorities continuing to be indifferent towards the agitating employees.

While holding a dharna and demonstration against the anti-employees policies of the state government at Mini Secretariat here today, activists of the Class IV Government Employees Union threatened to further intensify the agitation if the government failed to conceded the pending demands.

Labourer held for killing wife’s paramour
Mandi Ahmedgarh, March 17
The local police assisted the UP police in the arrest of a migrant labourer who had allegedly killed the paramour of his wife in UP on February 13 and had been living in disguise since then. A team of the UP police took him to Dhinga police station in Sarwasa district where a murder case had been registered against him.

In a daylight robbery attempt an unidentified armed person tried to enter the house of an industrialist in Model Town Extension here today but fled after stabbing the industrialist’s wife twice as she had raised an alarm.

Dharna against ‘anti-teacher’ policies of government

Award conferred on PAU Registrar
Ludhiana, March 17
Dr Vinod Kumar Sharma, Registrar, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana has been awarded gold medal by Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers (ISAE), the highest award of the ISAE, in its 39th Annual Convention held at AP Agricultural University, Hyderabad. This gold medal is awarded to persons for their outstanding contribution to agricultural engineering.

Students were given school uniforms and stationery at the annual prize distribution of government elementary school, Ruri (Amloh Block) on Monday. Chief guest Dr Gulzar Singh a NRI gave rupees 10,000/- to the school for furniture and cost of mementos, stationery and the cost of the school dress.

20 accident cases settled
Ludhiana, March 17

The District Legal Services Authority today organised a pre-Lok Adalat to settle motor accident cases under the supervision of the Sessions Judge, Mr Harbans Lal. Twenty of the 60 cases pertaining to New India Assurance Company were settled.

Blood test can detect onset of prostate cancer

‘Prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the male population, can be detected at an early stage through a simple blood test called prostate specific antigen (PSA) and early diagnosis of the disease can make a vital difference in its treatment and management.’

Rare advanced laparoscopic surgery was performed on a couple of patients at a private hospital here by Dr Arindam Ghosh, known for his work in the field of minimal invasive surgery. These observations were made by Dr Mohan Verghese, head of Uro-Oncology at the Washington Cancer Centre in the USA, while on a visit to the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here, yesterday.
