Genius of Kaifi Azmi brought alive Rani Balbir Kaur's much acclaimed production on the life and times of Kaifi Azmi was staged at Tagore Theatre for the fourth time on Friday. The show was dedicated to the guests from Pakistan. As expected the gathering was thick. The show went on smoothly, baring Kaifi, verse by verse. For Rani Balbir, the event was specially structured as it was to promote love and friendship, something which Kaifi Azmi did throughout his literary career. Drawn from Rani Balbir Kaur's personal experiences with the poet, Shaukat Azmi's autobiography "Yaad ki Rahguzar", Shabana Azmi's articles about her father and Javed Akhtar's poem, the script did justice to the poet. So did the cast which kept the audience interest alive. The play "Waqt ne kiya kya hasin sitam..." was directed by Rani Balbir. It introduced Kaifi Azmi by way of his film poetry which spelt class and purpose. Weaving together bits from the poet's life, his relationship with wife Shaukat and his association with the Communist Party of India, the play brings alive the genius of Kaifi Azmi. The production was rich with verse that reflected the various moods of the quintessential rebel. No wonder most of the acts inspired applause. TNS |

Sitarist Pushpa Verma charms audience Music maestros opt to be performers while young and at the fag end of their career resort to teaching but the exceptions are always there as the accomplished sitarist Pushpa Verma felt otherwise. Armed with a 35 years of teaching experience at the Post graduate level coupled with long practicing session, Pushpa Verma is a class apart if her sitar recital at the Pracheen Kala Kendra today was any indication. An A grade artist of All-India Radio and Doordarshan unassuming Pushpa is a complete classical artiste having proper education and training in vocal music, Instrumental and Kathak dance learnt form the musicologists like Bhagwan Dass Saini, Lachhman Singh Seen, Swami Keshav Nanda respectively. Her being versatile in all realms of art was of immense help to her while heading the department of Instrumental music at Government College for girls here. Pushpa Verma bared melody of popular raag ‘Kirwani’ with elaboration of the alaap before moving on to the Jod alaap and the crisp ‘Jhalla’. She maintained the melodic element of the raag in the slow tempo of Vilamabat gat and the fast paced ‘Drut ‘ composition both set to a rhythmic pattern of sixteen beats. The conclusion too was impressive which finally came through a ‘dhun’ in melodious raag bhairavi but in a six beat ‘dadra taal’. Dr Mahendra Parsad of Benaras gharana maintained the melody meter on tabla. The Kendra director M.L. Koser honoured the artists. |
Lakhwinder Wadali regales Pak guests
Bade miyan so bade miyan chhote miyan subbhaan Allah..’ can be the veritable attribute to the Sufina gayaki of young Lakhwinder Wadali son of Padma Shri Puran Chand of ‘Wadali bothers' duo. He regaled the crowd especially the Pakistani guests with his choicest compositions from his album ‘Bullah’ and from other sufi mystics, in a musical programme organised by the ‘Vir Deva Foundation' and the
Chandigarh administration in honour of the guests and delegates from Pakistan.
The thirteen-member strong contingent of his artistes took the centre stage to open the soiree with Shah Hussain’s classic ‘Mann atkeya be parwaah..’. This attracted the clusters of audience to be near the open stage. Lakhi, as affectionately called in music circles maintained a balance of rending compositions replete with the mysticism of Sufi saints and romantic folk numbers as well. ‘Ve sonne de Kangna’ was well received as also ‘Kandde utte Mehrama ve'. The next crisp number ‘Deeva naa bujhayeen aje raat baki hai..’ had some in the audience dancing. Lakhwinder doled out more numbers from his latest album like ‘Bulla ki jaana mein kaun, Tu maneda ein and others. He was accompanied by Kamaljit on Key board, Raju on Tabla, Sonu on Octopad, Ashani and Ajay on Dholak and others gave him the vocal support.
