Robust prospects in body-building
Pervin Malhotra

Q I have done MBBS from Ukraine and am due to take the MCI screening test this year. I have my own gym and I want to be a fitness trainer by profession. Could you suggest some good courses?

Navneet, Noida

A Growing health and fitness awareness has given birth to a slew of new professions. One of them is that of a fitness instructor.

The fitness trainer's job is to train people in different aspects of fitness. In other words, a fitness trainer helps you get in shape and improve your body tone and stamina - whether you are a sedentary corporate honcho or a professional golfer or film star.

Based on his/her knowledge of human anatomy, diet, nutrition and fitness, a good trainer should be able to design specific programs for different people depending on their age, lifestyle and physical condition. While some trainers specialise in specific areas such as aerobics or weights training, others are veritable all-rounders. There are courses available in India and abroad where you can learn how to be a fitness trainer.

Understandably, the first essential requirement is an athletic body and loads of stamina. Then go for a professional course like Reebok Instructor Certification or the Nike Aerobics Course or any reputed locally offered course.

In Delhi, Reebok India offers a Reebok Aerobic Instructor Certification Course twice a year at Club Xcell, GK-I. The 10-week course has an A-level Master Trainer Exam, which you must clear to be a certified trainer. Except for Step Reebok, most programmes are not equipment-based. Check for branches in the other cities on their website.

A typical course consists of 20-odd sessions, twice a week for two hours and costs Rs 22,000 (inclusive of study material, manual and music CDs). Treat the course as a mere kick-off point. Keep reading up on fitness and experiment continuously - there's no end to learning in this field as new research and equipment keeps hitting the headlines.

After finishing the course you can start with assisting a senior aerobics instructor in a health club or fitness centres before you start taking your own classes or become a personal instructor. Corporate fitness programmes are also gaining in popularity these days.

BBA basics

Q I will be appearing for the Class XII board exams this year. Kindly tell me the eligibility and scope of BBA?

Hemant Singla

A For admission to a good BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) course, you need to have a minimum aggregate of 50 per cent in Class XII (some like the DU may even ask for 60 per cent). Some of the not-so-good institutions tend to waive this requirement.

Typically, admission to most of the BBA courses is through an objective-type entrance test conducted by the respective institutions. The tests are typically geared to measure your mental and numerical ability, logical reasoning, language skills and general knowledge, particularly with reference to business and commercial matters. This may be followed by a GD and interview.

While this course provides an overview of business management in a nutshell, it doesn't offer much scope by itself, either in India or elsewhere, unless you follow it up with a good MBA. After which you will start off as an executive or assistant manager in any of the business organisations, manufacturing companies, export or trading houses, financial concerns, banks, NGOs, PSUs or multinational corporations. In the private sector, promotions are essentially based on your efficiency and enterprise, while in the public sector, seniority is the determining factor. Needless to say, the kind of job you will get and the salary you will be offered will to a large extent depend on the reputation of the B-school you graduate from.

Dabble in dubbing

Q I am keen to know about the work of a dubbing artist. Is it a viable option?

Manish Uniyal, Meerut

A Considering the diversity of languages spoken in our country, there is a great demand for dubbing and voiceover artistes. Some of the larger film and television production houses have their own in-house dubbing departments.

As a dubbing or voiceover artiste you should not only be fluent in the language but also versatile enough to match your inflections, tone and pauses to synchronise with the original sound track and visuals. For example, the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which were originally made in Hindi, have now been dubbed in most of the Indian and several foreign languages.

Besides, almost every Hollywood film, big or small, which is now screened in India, has a Hindi release. Similarly, a large number of popular serials and 'infotainment' programmes are now being dubbed in Indian languages to increase their viewership.

In TV serials, dubbing artistes are paid about Rs 1,000-1,500 per episode, but depending on the artiste's capability and the length and complexity of the role, they command as much as Rs. 10,000 per episode. In films you can get up to a lakh by lending your voice to a single character on the screen, if you are really good. You could also lend your voice for documentaries, presentations and radio/TV spots. Contact some of the better-known recording studios in your town for a break.
