CARve a niche in vehicle designing
Pervin Malhotra

Q I am a student of B. Sc Physics (Part II). I am fond of motor vehicles and hence interested in vehicle designing. Is there any course either in India or abroad that I can do?

Vasu Jaisawal

A Although a degree in automobile engineering would have been ideal for the purpose, there are other options to look at.

While there is no separate degree or diploma course for automobile design, the Master of Design course taught at IIT, Powai's Industrial Design Centre (IDC) and the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, incorporate modules on automobile design.

Moreover, virtual designing and test-crash simulations have now made the design engineer's job much quicker.

Internationally, the Art Centre College of Design, Pasadena, Centre for Creative Studies, Detroit, the Academy of Art College, San Francisco, and Pratt Institute, New York, are amongst the best known.

In Europe, some of the well-known names are Royal College of Art, London, Coventry School of Art & Design, UMEA Institute of Design, Sweden, and Fachhochule Pforzheim, Germany.

Many of the traditional areas of engineering (mechanical, automobile) provide related course offerings. Colleges and universities offering these courses usually have active student chapters of the Society of Automotive Engineers. The website of the US based Society of Automotive Engineers (ww.sae.org), including its Indian chapter (www.saeindia.org) should be useful in your search.

You could even contact the faculty advisors of the various Indian collegiate chapters like the one in Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, for details.

Also, do read up on people like Dilip Chhabria, whose vehicle designs have won international renown. His website is: www.dcdesign.co.in

MBBS abroad

Q I am a student of Class XII. I am keen to apply to an American university for MBBS. Will it be very expensive? Please advise how I should go about it.

Gurjot Singh

A It is extremely difficult for international students to get admission into US medical schools. It is very competitive and US citizens are given first priority at medical schools. Less than one per cent of international students are enrolled in American medical schools.

Doctor of Medicine (MD), the first course in medicine in America , is taught only after a four-year bachelor's level US education with biology, physics and chemistry in plus two. The American MD is different from the Indian one, which is a postgraduate qualification in a particular field of medicine or surgery.

Fees for medical courses are really steep. On an average, tuition costs are over Rs. 60-70 lakhs pa. And there are no scholarships available. For international students it is very difficult to get full funding. However, during residency, they receive "reasonably good" fellowships.

So, it is much better to do your MBBS in India and then go to the US for residency programmes (Ph.D.), for which you must clear the US Medical Licensure Exam (USMLE).
