Kindly tell me about the various options open to a commerce students to become an Army officer. — Sidharth Shankar A There are two ways of joining the Indian Army — Permanent and Short Service Commissions. After completing Class XII (Comm), you can take the NDA Entrance Exam. The National Defence Academy (NDA) recruits cadets for permanent commission for sessions beginning January and July each year. Since you do not have a science background, you are only eligible for joining the Army and not the Navy and Air Force wings. The training extends over a period of three years. Admission is on the basis of a written test followed by an interview and fitness test. Alternatively, you can do your B.Com and then take the Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which is followed by an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB). Through the CDSE route, male graduates can gain entry into the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehra Dun (leading to Permanent Commission in the Army) and Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai (leading to Short Service Commission in the Army). Sc (Physics) this year and want to do master's degree from IIT. Please give me information about the admission procedures for M. Sc courses. — Jayati Sehegal A All IITs admit students to their two-year full-time M. Sc programmes through an All-India Joint Admission Test (JAM). The first JAM (2004-'05) was conducted by IIT-Roorkee. The test will be held in early May all over the country and admission to the programme will be on the basis of merit/ rank in the JAM-2005. The application form and the information brochure will go on sale at designated banks and IIT counters from 27 January onwards. The forms can also be had by post from the organising institute from January 27 and online registration of candidates will also start at the IIT-Roorkee website from the same date.
