‘Do not wallow in self-pity or cry’

Hema Malini has played many roles successfully and, of course, her age-defying beauty bowls one over. In an interview with Vibha Sharma, the actress gives advice on how to cope with life

Hema Malini has always made news. Whether it has been her stint as the leading lady of several Bollywood blockbusters, her relationship and subsequent marriage with the much-married Dharmendra, the innate dignity with which she has dealt with all the turbulence in her personal and professional life or her age-defying beauty that can still make several young hearts beat, Hema has always been in news.

As a Parliamentarian, who attends the proceedings of the House as a part of the learning process to acquaint herself with the new role in her life, she is specifically focusing on malnutrition among women and children. Hema takes her role as a Parliamentarian as seriously as she does her reel roles. She disagrees that film stars just appear during election days to gather crowds , after which they disappear to the cosy confines of their air-conditioned homes, only to reappear at the next elections. And she also disagrees with the popular belief that most actors, barring a couple like Shatrughan Sinha and Shabana Azmi, are not taken very seriously either by political parties or people, something which they themselves prove time and again by not doing justice to their responsibilities as Parliamentarians.

As Hema says, "I agree I am new to politics, but it takes time to learn new things. With experience, I am sure I will be able to learn how, in my capacity as a responsible Parliamentarian, I will be able to fulfill my responsibilities towards society in a much better way. At present, I want to begin with my social responsibilities in a small way. First, by cleaning up Juhu, where I live, and then Mumbai, which is my karmabhoomi.

When she is asked what is the secret of her age-defying beauty, her almost-ethereal looks in mega-hit Baghbaan and what is her advice to millions of young and not-so-young women who want to emulate her and look like her, her answer is, "There are problems in everyone's life. Dukh and sukh are a part of your life, my life. Learn how to tackle the dukh in your life. It is very easy to drown in self pity and resort to crying. Many women do that. Don't do that, is what I would like to tell women. Then women should learn to take care of themselves. The freshness on my face that everyone keeps talking of is the result of regular exercise, yoga, meditation and spiritualism. My nritya has also played a major role in keeping me fit. Believe me, as far as Baghbaan is concerned, the cameraman of the film is the one who deserves all accolades." How does someone, who lives and breathes cinema (she is also planning to direct another film sometime next year) like she does, manage to balance all the different roles in her life, of a mother, wife actor, dancer and politician."Cinema is my identity. Till now I have been able to strike a balance by spending qualitytime with my family and taking out time for films and dance. With time, I will hopefully do better. As an artiste, I am satisfied. I have played all roles that I ever wanted to, experienced everything I would ever want to. There is no regret."
