Seminar on modern English literature

Ludhiana, January 24
The 20th century English literature was mostly torn by strife and trauma of the events that took place. Making these observations, speakers at the inaugural session of a national seminar on “Modern English Literature (1901-1970)” remarked: “English literature of these seven decades should be seen against the background of large and many sided non-literary thought currents and epochal events”.

Inaugurating the seminar senior diplomat and the former High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mr G Parthasarthy, underlined the contribution of Indian writers like Salman Rushdie, V.S. Naipaul, Vikram Seth, Arundhati Roy and others to the English literature of the 20th century. He said out, the writers of the Indian origin and living abroad or those living in India had made an unparalleled contribution to the English literature in this century.

Although a career diplomat who did his engineering from Chennai and joined Army before he went into the foreign services, Mr Parthasarthy made an interesting presentation about the modern Indian writers in English. He dwelt in detail on the recent book of Vikas Swarup, Q&A which is a best seller.

In his keynote address Dr AA Mutalik Desai, a Fulbright Fellow and retired Professor of English from the IIT, Mumbai, remarked that the 20th century literature witnessed numerous phenomenal changes like the two world wars, an economic crisis with worldwide implication, the rise and fall of an ideological empire, the end of European colonial empires and the consequent ushering in of freedom in vast areas of Africa and Asia, the nuclear threshold, problems of a post-industrial society, coming of political and religions extremism and fanaticism, unprecedented developments in science and technology etc.

He maintained that the 20th century English Literature too was the cite for equally profound changes whose effect was felt on the literatures in other languages separated by heterogenous cultures, the long shadows of history and nationality.

In her theme paper, the chief organiser of the seminar and the Vice-Principal of the college, Ms Manju Chawla, dwelt upon various aspects of the modern literature. She pointed out various strife and influences and their consequences on the other literatures.

In her welcome address, the Principal, Dr Anup Kaur Bansal, highlighted various aspects of the trends in modern English literature and the various influences that worked over it.

Lajpat Rai raps Bhattal over Law College issue

Ludhiana, January 24
Senior BJP leader and a former Member of Parliament Lala Lajpat Rai today criticised Deputy Chief Minister, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal for announcing to name the Law College Ludhiana after late Joginder Pal Pandey.

He said Ms Bhattal had no role in the nomenclature of the college, as her department had nothing to do with it.

In a statement issued here today, the senior BJP leader said the university Senate had proposed to name the college after Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJP’s earlier incarnation) or late Lala Lajpat Rai, the great freedom fighter.

Mr Rai observed that Mr Pandey might have sacrificed his life for the country, but naming the institution after him without the concurrence of the university Senate was not proper.

City students win medals in
international painting contest

Ludhiana, January 24
Two students of BCM Senior Secondary School, situated on the Chandigarh Road, won silver medals in the Second International Children Painting Exhibition organised by the Kshitij Art Institution recently. More than 5,000 children from India, Egypt, Nigeria, the USA, Malaysia, Turkey and Qatar participated in the contest. Two students of BCM Senior Secondary School, Love Garg and Komal Bishnoi, got silver medals while other students got merit and participation certificates.

In another competition held recently by the Hind Educational Trust and Research Centre, five students of the school won the Kala Vibhushan Award and gold medals. The students who won gold medals are Gagandeep Singh, Maneet Khanna, Aditi Sridhar, Archana Sharma, Mukul Sachdeva.

Lectures on career guidance: New Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, held a career guidance session in the school auditorium on Monday. Mr Swapan Channa, in charge of admissions, Ms Abha Bajaj of the Management Department, and Madhuri Sood of the Computer Department from the Punjab College of Technical Education, Baddowal, delivered lectures. They updated the students about the latest trends, upcoming demands and changing phenomena of jobs. They informed students about various courses available after Class XII.

All three faculty members spoke in detail on various courses available for the students of arts and commerce streams. In particular, the courses being taught at the PCTE were discussed.

PTU organises campus interviews

Quest Infosys, a regional learning and facilitation centre of Punjab Technical University, today held campus interviews for all Distant Education Learning Centres of the PTU.

Ms Misha, value anchor and an official recruiter, conducted interviews for the HSBC and DELL for the posts of assistant manager, customer care executives and technical support executives.

Ms Misha made students aware of the organisations with the help of an audio-visual presentation. She told the students about the basic products and services at the HSBC Electronic Data Processing India Ltd. The presentation was followed by personal interview with Ms Misha and Ms Monika in which around 50 candidates participated. There will be total six rounds of interview. “Shortlisted candidates will be informed about the results telephonically and will go for rest of the five rounds to Chandigarh,” said the Placement Officer.

Meeting: The executive committee meeting of the Non-Government Colleges Management Federation of Punjab and Chandigarh was held at the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan campus, Model Town, recently under the presidentship of Mr S.C. Sanwalka.

The meeting noted with concern that grants under the 95 per cent grant- in aid scheme were pending for the past more than five years to the tune of more than Rs 100 crore. The colleges had not received salary grants from the Punjab Government after August, 2004. This had created a serious crises for the non-government colleges. The meeting called upon the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, and Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Deputy Chief Minister, to intervene and release the grants.

The general body meeting of the federation will be held in March to chalk out the future course of acton.

Primary teachers hold meeting

Eight organisations of primary teachers under a united front, the Primary Elementary Sikhya Bachao Front, Punjab, organised a meeting here today under its convener, Mr Piara Singh Dhillon.

The meeting was attended by Ajit Singh Mand, Pritpal Singh, Mahender Singh Heer, Rajinder Singh Pannu, Karan Raj Singh Gill, Gurdeep Singh Bajwa, Gurdeep Singh Ahluwalia , Baldev Krishan Moudgil, Manjit Singh Virk and Balwinder Singh. The teachers expressed their happiness at the government decision to start ETT classes but said the classes should start from April 1, 2005.

In a resolution passed unanimously, the teachers condemned the statement of the Finance Minister, Mr Surinder Singh Singla, wherein he stated that the teachers would be recruited on contract basis.

They said Mr Singla’s adoption of old rules and regulations will not be tolerated by 50,000 primary teachers.

Mr Piara Singh Dhillon said in a press note that the teachers would go on fast on February 17 in front of the office of the DPI, Chandigarh.

3,000 students take part in painting contest

More than 3000 students from 45 schools participated in a painting competition organised by Pidilite Industries Limited in the Guru Nanak Stadium here today.
The participants were divided into seven groups on the basis of their classes.

The panel of judges comprised Ms Babbli and Mr Kulwant Singh.

The students from LKG to Class IV were given printed sheets and the participants had to fill in colours. For Class V and VI, the students were given the topic of Republic Day whereas the students of VII & VII had to paint the festival of Lohri. Natural Disaster was the topic given to the students of Class IX and X. The students of Class XI and XII were asked to paint how India would appear in the year 2020.

Training programme for teachers

About 1,000 government school teachers got exclusive in-service training at block level and at the GITC in the past two months on the directions of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). This wad disclosed by Ms Usha Sidhu , Principal of the GITC, here today.

Ms Sidhu said the next schedule of the block-level training of teachers would commence from March, 2005, and the five-day training schedules would cover six blocks of the district. These include Dehlon II, Machhiwara, Sidhwan Bet I, Samrala I, Doraha and Pakhowal blocks, under the 20-day annual compulsory and mandatory training scheme for every government school upper primary teacher.

Over 1,100 patients examined at medical camps

More than 750 patients were examined at a free medical camp organised by the Shree Lakshmi Narayan Mandir Sabha in Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar (C-Block) here in association with Shree Rama Charitable Hospital, Dholewal, and Shree Sham Lal Charitable Hospital, Basti Jodhewal, yesterday.

According to Mr Rajinder Gupta, president of the sabha, a team of doctors with specialisation in fields like orthopaedics, gynaecology, skin, medicine, ENT and paediatrics conducted the check-up and free medicines were also distributed among the patients.

Those undergoing the medical check up at the camp included over 100 children from Jhuggi Jhopri School, being run by the Nishkam Sewa Ashram.

At another medical camp organised by the Sahibzada Welfare Society with the assistance of Kiran Hospital at Suresh Model High School in Partap Nagar locality, around 400 patients were examined and free medicines were distributed. The camp was dedicated to third centenary of martyrdom of ‘sahibzadas’ and 4th anniversary of the society.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr Jagtar Singh Matharoo expressed gratitude on behalf of the members of the society to the collaborating hospital and team of doctors, comprising Dr Tarlochan Singh, Dr Jaskiran Kaur, Dr Gurdeep Ralhan and Dr Inderjit Bagga.

Lecture on ‘Science of breathing’ today

The health education cell of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) will organise the 40th public health lecture on “Science of breathing” at the Dumra auditorium in the hospital here on January 25.

Prof Vinod Kochupillai, Chief, Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS, New Delhi, will throw light on the science of “pranayam”, described as a magic remedy for innumerable diseases and key to stay young.

Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, medical superintendent and convener, health education cell, DMCH said people from all walks of life could attend this lecture. The lecture was aimed at motivating the people to lead a quality life through simple breathing techniques.

Dr Chhina added that the research initiated by AIIMS and several other bodies like NIMHANS, Bangalore and Bangalore Medical College had also found positive results of breathing exercises on body and mind.

Athletics meet at SVM School

The annual athletics meet was held at the local Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, here today. Students from primary section and middle section exhibited talent during the fun games and other regular events.

Ms Sadhna Sharma, Principal of the school, read out the annual report and highlighted the achievements of students in the field of academics, sports and cultural activities during the current session. Mr Rajesh Kashyap, Mr Chaman Lal Sachdeva and other members of the management committee were present on the occasion.

Mr Surinder Dawar, Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, gave away the prizes to the winners.

He admired the shining stars of the schools for achieving goals in different fields.

Sports festival from Feb 5

The preparations for the annual sports festival at Jarkhar village, 15 km from here, are on in full swing. The 19th edition of the Mata Sahib Kaur Gold Cup Hockey Tournament is scheduled to be held from February 5 to 7.

A meeting of the organising committee of the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Club was held under the chairmanship of Mr Narinder Pal Singh Sidhu, Superintendent of Police, here last evening. The meeting reviewed the preparations for the tournament.

Mr Sidhu said the main attraction of this year’s festival would be a wresting bout for the prestigious Punjab Kesari Title between Rustam-e-Hind, Harvinder Alamgir, and Sher-e-Hind, Sarvar Mohali. Besides, competitions in hockey, kabaddi, volleyball, basketball and hockey would be conducted during this three-day festival.

Mr Rajdeep Gill, ADGP, Punjab and president, Basketball Federation of India, will inaugurate the festival. Mr Gill will also declare open the newly built basketball courts at the stadium at a cost of Rs 7 lakh. The club will honour national hockey coach Baldev Singh with the Surjit Singh Randhawa award and wrestler Channa Alamgir will receive the Amarjit Singh Grewal award. Kabaddi star Jagtar Singh Dhanola will be given the Harjit Bajkhana award.
