Style mantra

Shweta Gulati is making style statements
Shweta Gulati is making style statements

She’s sensuous and stuck up — but that’s just on TV. Shweta Gulati is a part of the moony gen’s new show, Remix on Star One where she plays one of the four trendy young people who spell out style mantra for the new year.

But Shweta says that Tia Ahuja — the character she plays in the funky show — is most unlike her in real life. "Tia’s full of herself, I am not. I had to change my voice for the role and had to act like a school kid."

But more than Tia and Remix, Shweta has a rare first to her name. She’s one of the first stars to outrightly decline an Ekta Kapoor offer. "Saas-bahu characters are boring and storylines stale. I don’t want to be stuck in a never-ending saga," she says boldly.

Shweta, who has just finished acting in an offbeat film Detective Nani, is gung-ho about her future. "I am just starting off and the sky’s the limit." If she can thumb down a Balaji offer, then the sky’s sure the limit for gutsy Shweta.

A reason to dance

Jaaved Jaffery is set for another dance mix
Jaaved Jaffery is set for another dance mix

It is being billed as the ultimate battle between hip and hop. A dance show with a difference. And where there’s dance can the Boogie Badshah be far behind?

Dance Dance hosted by Jaaved Jaffery on Sony is a foot-tapping show that promises to keep young viewers on their toes. Couples from across India will meet in a melee of movements to try and win the title of India’s Ultimate Dancing Couple along with a contract of Rs 20 lakh and an opportunity to appear in a music video.

Along with Jaffrey there will be a panel of judges, including choreographer Saroj Khan who will judge the contestants on the basis of their chemistry and talent as they perform on a wide range of themes, including item numbers, folk songs and even disco. Jaaved says the show will have the nation gyrating to its moves. But going by the not-so-happening Boogie Woogie hosted by Jaaved on the same channel, one will have to wait and watch whether Dance Dance is worth the song and dance it’s being made out to be.

Movieing ambition

Akashdeep Saigal has his focus clear
Akashdeep Saigal has his focus clear

Luck parted ways with him in his early attempts at stardom. But then he won the Gladrags Manhunt title in 1997 and since then, things have never been the same for him.

Today there’s hardly a ‘K’ fan who hasn’t heard of Akashdeep Saigal — the star who plays the vile Ansh Gujral in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

But television is clearly not his final destination. It’s the big screen that gets his adrenalin pumping. Even though his first two films Pyar Main Kabhi Kabhi and Supaari failed to make a mark, he still dreams of making it big some day.

And it’s not just any film that he’s hankering after. Listen to him`85 "I am working on a film script that is almost complete. The shooting will start next month and I’ll be directing the film as well as acting in it. Believe me, it will be an Oscar winning performance." Movie-ing ambition no doubt.

Instant fame

Instant Khichdi team: Kiting it to Gujarat
Instant Khichdi team: Kiting it to Gujarat

The mad-cap Parekhs of Instant Khichdi on Star One are one popular Guju family. Proof of this was the unusual invitation the unit received from Gujarat to inaugurate the week-long International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad that started on January 14. And guess who invited them? Narendra Modi’s government, of course.

J.D. Majethia, producer and star of the serial, says "It was an honour to inaugurate a festival that is so significant for the Gujaratis. It’s a week-long event to celebrate Makar Sankranti. The sky changes into a rainbow of colours and everything comes alive."

Though the team was recognised and welcomed everywhere, it wasn’t just kiting. The Instant Khichdi team took time out to collect funds for the rehabilitation of all those who came in the fold of the killer Tsunami quake.

So, apart from their zany sense of humour, the Parekhs seem to have their hearts in the right place.

Gable’s fables

Clark Gable: Too hot to handle
Clark Gable…Too hot to handle

Clark Gable was simply "The King". In the world of vintage Hollywood, he reigned supreme. He worked for 25 years at MGM, a studio that claimed it had "more stars than are in the heavens." But there was no doubt in anyone’s mind who shone the brightest.

Gable starred in one of the greatest films of all time, Gone With The Wind, won an Oscar in his first film, It Happened One Night and was nominated for another in Too Hot To Handle. Yet for all his outward trappings of success, in his own life, Gable was neither the flamboyant hero nor the carefree rogue he often portrayed on screen.

In real life, he never earned much respect and engaged in a string of relationships with older women. He never knew the child he fathered in an affair with Loretta Young. Watch the intimate story of Clark Gable on the History Channel Sunday, January 23, 10 p.m.
