Best selling author Chetan Bhagat, whose film version of the book Five Point Someone - What Not To Do At IIT, is set to hit the silver screen soon, says his next book will not be a sequel to his debut novel or about educational institutions.

Five Point Someone, or "FPS" as it is popularly known, published by Rupa and Company and called a "charming debut" by Time magazine, had gone into a fifth reprint within two months, a rare record in Indian publishing.

Bhagat, who studied at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta after the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, had been expected to come out with a book on IIM.

"I am working on my second novel. At this point I would rather not reveal the subject, but it will be a modern India fiction leaning toward humour. At this point I am not doing a sequel to ‘FPS’ or another campus story. I need to develop myself as an author. So trying out different stories, even though scarier and less safe, is the right way for me," said the Hong Kong-based author.
"By and large, I am very positive on Indian fiction going forward.

"I think the allure of a good book remains but they are at the bottom of entertainment priorities for a lot of people after TV, film, sports etc.

Publishers should realise that the competition in many cases may not be other books, but other leisure categories," he said. — IANS
