4 PU eves in Indian varsities’ handball team

Chandigarh, January 21
Four girls from Panjab University and five from Guru Nanak Dev University figure in the 16-member Indian universities' women's handball team which will participate in the 33rd Women's National Handball Championship to be held at Bhillai from January 24 to 29.

According to coach Narinder Singh, two girls from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak; one each from Chaudhary Devi Lal University and Himachal Pradesh University, besides three from Punjabi University, Patiala, have also been picked in the squad. Depending on the team's performance in the nationals, the Association of Indian Universities will decide on its participation in the World Inter-University Championship scheduled to be held later this year.

The team: Kamini, Rakesh, Roman, Sonia (Panjab University); Jaspreet, Sandeep, Harmit, Virdevinder, Lavjot (GND University); Kavita, Meena (MDU); Neetu (Chaudhary Devi Lal University); Sudesh (HP University); and Mandeep, Niti, and Rajbir (Punjabi University).

Ms Amarjit Kaur and Mr Narinder Singh will accompany the team as manager and coach, respectively. The team will be leaving for Bhillai tomorrow.

Rowing championship: Saroj, Vikinder win Single Scull event

Saroj Bala and Vikinder Kumar bagged the Single Scull event in the women’s and men’s section respectively in the Chandigarh State Senior Rowing Championship, held today at the Sukhna Lake .The races were conducted on the 2000-meter long water course, according to the FISA/RFI rules and regulations. The events held in the championship included, Single Scull, Double Scull, Coxless Pairs and Coxless Fours.

Results:Boys: Single Scull: Vikinder Kumar 1, 8:32.91; Sishan Pal 2, 8:41.57; Naveen Singh 3, 8:59.27. Double Scull : Manjeet Singh and Vikinder Kumar 1, 7:45.21; Sishan Pal and M. Anthony Singh 2, 8:10.80; Sanjay Kumar and Amrit Pal Singh 3, 8:40.98. Coxless Pairs : Mangal Singh and Tarsem Singh 1, 8:03.40; Gaurav Sharma and Vipin Kamboj 2, 8:13.16; Kamaljit Singh and Manjit Singh 3, 8:24.80. Coxless Fours : Gurpal Singh, Dalip Kumar, Parveen Kumar and Sukhbir Singh 1, 7:24.89; Gaurav Sharma, Hardeep Singh, Angrej Kumar and Vipin Kamboj 2, 7:33.32; Tarsem Singh, Ram Narayan, Mangal Singh and Nanak Chand 3, 7:48.34.

Girls: Single Scull: Saroj Bala 1,9: 33.48. Double Scull: Munshadi and Rajeshwari 1 9:05.10; Meera and Ranjana 2, 9:35.78. Coxless Pairs: Renuka Sarkar and Babita 1,9: 45.90: Kirandeep Kaur and Munshadi 2,9:59.88: Coxless Fours : Ranjana, Babita, Meera and Rajeshwari 1,8:44.09 Manjuri, Savita, Poonam and Neeru- disqualified.

Selection trials

The Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) will hold selection trials to select 25 girl probables for a coaching camp prior to their final selection for the forthcoming Senior National (Girls) Football Championship to be held at Imphal from February 20 to March 5. According to Mr Rakesh Bakshi, Secretary of the CFA, the trials will be held on January 24 at 3.30 pm at Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45.

PU campus annex cricket title

Chandigarh, January 21
Panjab University campus, Chandigarh, clinched the PU Inter-College Cricket Championship when they outplayed GGD SD College, Sector 32, by one wicket. DAV College, Sector 10, got third place and they defeated GGN Khalsa, College, Ludhiana, by 198 runs.

Brief scores: GGDSD-32 — Gourav Gupta 55, Charanjeet 49, Rakesh Sehgal 4 for 32, Harit Sharma 3 for 16); PUC: 192 runs for nine in 44.1 overs (Amandeep 68 n.o., Anshul Arora 35, Vipin Saggar 29, Sourav 23, Gourav 2 for 25, Akashdeep 2 for 32, Varun Khanna 2 for 35).

In the match played for third place between DAVC and GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana, it was Karan Kherwal of DAVC who wrecked the batting line up of Ludhiana boys by claiming seven wickets for just 16 runs. Earlier, DAV College had made 244 runs for six while in reply, Khalsa college, Ludhiana, batsmen were bundled out for just 46 runs in 11.2 overs.

Football tourney

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, and Chandigarh Football Academy (Red) team made it to the last eight of the Chandigarh Junior Challenge Football cup (under-16) meet being played here today at Sector 42 Sports Complex. Coaching Centre, Ambala, DAV, Kurali, Coaching Centre, Nawanshahr, Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, Mehar Academy, Kurali, and CFA (Blue) were the other teams who will vie for top honours in the quarterfinal.

In the matches played today, CFA (Red) beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, by 6-0, Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, defeated Mount Carmel-47 by 10-0, DAVSSS, Sector 8, beat Shishu Niketan-22 by 6-0 , CFA (Blue) downed St Peter’s School, Sector 37, by 9-0 and Mehar Academy, Kurali, got the better of GMSSS-23 by 5-0.
