Poor response to workshop on higher education Chandigarh, January 21 With not even half of the participants reporting for the workshop, the two-day exercise was aimed at preparing a draft of recommendations for updating syllabi and systems in the wake of contemporary requirements. Inaugurated by the Education Minister of West Bengal, Mr Kanti Biswas, the workshop was a part of an exercise to prepare a vision document on the autonomy of institutions in higher education. This was the fourth workshop, the last in the series held under the aegis of the Central Advisory Board of Education. The recommendations of all four workshops will be put together and a white paper would be brought out for introducing the concept of autonomy in higher education. The workshop was attended by principals, heads of institutions and academiciaus. Seminar The importance and statutory requirements of corporate governance were stressed at a seminar on “Corporate governance with special reference to directors’ responsibility” at GGDSD College, Sector 32, here on Friday. Organised by the local chapter of the Northern India Regional Council of Institute of Company Secretaries, the seminar was inaugurated by the Managing Director, Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, Mr Samir Mathur. He stressed upon the role of company secretaries in advising and implementing good corporate governance. The chairman of the local chapter, Mr Mukesh Sharma, spoke about the increased liabilities of directors, particularly nominee directors, of leading institutions and banks. A former president of the ICSI, Mr U.K. Chaudhary, said good corporate governance in companies and enterprises was essential for a good society. |
