Married man’s fantasy

Directorial debut for Bhagyashree
Directorial debut for Bhagyashree

With her sati-savitri image, it will be difficult to imagine that Bhagyashree has chosen the subject of a newly married man’s fantasies for her maiden telefilm. "I know most women directors choose to make female-oriented themes but I wanted my film to be different," says the actor who’s written and directed her debut telefilm Uff Yu Maa for Star One’s Friday film slot, Studio One.

Starring Sooraj Thapar and Anjali Mukhi, the film is an adult comedy about a married man fantasising about another woman while his wife is away. The result is a situational comedy of a man teetering on the edge.

Bhagyashree says she was busy finalising a thriller for the big screen when Star One came up with the offer and Uff Yu Maa happened. "The channel is very pleased with the outcome and I am doing more telefilms for Star One and Zee though there won’t be any more on the fantasy theme," says smiles.

But has she woven into her script any of her husband’s fantasies? "Well, I’m not telling you that." Not likely considering she doesn’t ever let hubby Himalaya out of her sight.

When she first came to Mumbai with big city dreams, she couldn’t have imagined that fortune would smile on her so fast. A year later today, both Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol are vying for her attention in Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon.

Time was when Divya Khosla was yet another Delhi model trying to get a foothold in the world of glamour. The big chance came after she did a Falguni Pathak music video Aiyyo Rama.

Since then it’s been a rollercoaster ride. She did cameos in Kya Haadsa, Kya Haqeeqat and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Then came the Honey Honey music video with Salman Khan that changed her life forever. One look at the video and Anil Sharma signed her for Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon.

"I still pinch myself and wonder if it is all a dream. Working not just with Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol but Amitabhji. Can anyone ask for a bigger debut?" The answer is no. Considering, the role was originally written for Aishwarya Rai.

Abhishek’s TV trip

Just a few years ago top film stars treated television as a pariah. But not anymore. The barriers have come crashing down after Kaun Banega Crorepati with top stars seeing a karma break on the small screen.

Viewers first saw Saif Ali Khan do a cameo in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. Vivek Oberoi was to follow suit. But the idea of featuring a hit-less Oberoi was hastily dropped.

Karan Johar pepped things up in Yeh Meri Life Hai. Then Shah Rukh Khan, Saif, Arjun Rampal, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee and Priyanka Chopra sizzled the small screen in Temptations 2004 on Zee that brought their European concert to the small screen.

But the most impressive has been Abhishek Bachchan who made an instant mark with a brief appearance on Zee TV’s Kareena Kareena. Such was the impact that the rating registered a steep rise. One just hopes Abhishek’s TV luck rubs off on films as well.

Diane’s comic streak

TV call for Diane Keaton
TV call for Diane Keaton

She may be best remembered for her role of the harassed Steve Martin’s wife in the Father of the Bride, but Diane Keaton is a lady of many parts.

Keaton, who won the Oscar for Best Actress for Annie Hall and nominated for another Oscar in 2004 for Something’s Gotta Give, is now putting her creative juices to great use on television. She has struck a deal with HBO to produce and star in a comedy series.

Keaton is no greenhorn on TV having done two telefilms — On Thin Ice and Surrender, Dorothy. She has behind-the-camera experience having directed Pasadena and parts of Twin Peaks and China Beach. But this is the first time she’ll be starring in a TV series.

And though there may not be an Oscar for a TV performance, fans are already awaiting the release of her series with baited breath.

What a life

Yeh Meri... fails to make a mark

... fails to make a mark

So whatever’s happening to Yeh Meri Life Hai on Sony? The fast plummeting TRPs of a serial that started so promisingly have taken the channel completely by surprise.

The truth behind this is the clever strategy of a rival channel. When Yeh Meri Life Hai’s popularity started scaling worrying heights, Star Plus pumped up the action in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and kept the viewers glued to the soap being aired at the same time.

Even before Sony could wizen up, a similar plan was adopted for Sony’s Ayushmaan. In a sudden twist in the storyline Star Plus killed Anurag in Kasauti Zindagi Kay. The move served two purposes. It put life into the snail-paced soap and more importantly pulled viewers away from Ayushmaan also being aired at the 8.30 p.m. slot. Though Anurag was back in Kasauti Zindagi Kay as a ghost, the damage seems to have been done. The makers of Ayushmaan appear as if they have seen a ghost—especially after the departure of Vijay Singh who played the lead part. NF
