Clinic on low vision aid at GMCH

Chandigarh, December 30
The Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, here will start a clinic on low vision aid from the coming new year.

According to a press note issued by the Head of the department, Prof Sunandan Sood, low vision is a term that refers to a permanent functional visual loss that cannot be corrected by medication, surgery or glasses.

Low vision results from the effects of diabetes on the retina, age related changes and in patients of high myopia. This low vision results in an impaired ability to perform day-to-day work and routine activities.

These patients can, however, benefit from low vision aid that will be provided during a special clinic on every Friday at the GMCH.

130 students donate blood

As many as 130 students of the Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) Sector 30 here donated blood at a special camp organised today in collaboration with the State Bank of India.

Mr Pawan Kapoor, Director CSIO, inaugurated the camp.

Mementos to the donors were given Mr M. K. Mittal, assistant general manager of the bank’s sector 30 branch.

Sushila, Gagan make it to last four of carrom tourney

Sushila Prasad and Gagandeep Singh entered the last four of the women and men singles event, respectively, of the seventh Raj Kumar Babuta Memorial Prize Money Carrom Tournament, which entered the penultimate day here today at the St Stephen's School, Sector 45.

In women's section, others who made it to the semifinals were, Kumari Kiran, Bhanu Jain and Anjali Yadav. In the men's section, Gagandeep was joined by Mohd Shahzad, Neeraj Bharti and Asif Iqbal in the semi-finals.

Earlier in the men's singles quarter-finals played today, Gagandeep outplayed Pardeep Mittal in straight games at 25-14, 25-0. He also scored the white slam in his tie against Pradeep in the fourth board of the second game.

In the women's singles, Bhanu Jain made the first upset when she downed third seed Inder Kanta in two straight games at 22-05, 25-03. Sushila Prasad sailed in the semi-final ousting Pallavi Piplani in a quarter-final tie which was a one sided affair with scores being 25-01, 25-05. The finals will be played tomorrow at 12.45 pm onwards.

Golf championship from Jan 27

Chandigarh, December 30
The Chandigarh Golf Association will hold the Fifth UT State Golf championship on January 27 and 28 at Chandigarh Golf Club. The events will be held for boys above 18 years, below 18, below 13, below 22 and below 15 years for girls with various handicaps.

According to Mr CSR Reddy, General Secretary, CGA, entries will close on January 15 and forms will be available at CGA Golf Range and Chandigarh Golf Club.
