Arvind Katyal

Mohali, December 15
At 85 plus, Mohali-based Pritam Singh Kochhar is on top of the world after securing four gold medals in various events in the just concluded 13th Asian Masters Athletics meet at Bangkok (Thailand) in the first week of December. Pritam won in 100 metres with timings of 24.44 seconds, then 200 metres in 49.0 seconds, 400 metres in 1.57.04 minutes and the 5000 metre walk in 37.42 minutes. He took part in above 85 category.

“I spent Rs 40,000 from my own pocket for my maiden international meet. I am satisfied with what I achieved”, said Pritam, who retired in 1977 from Defence Accounts Department at Meerut.

He was joined by another fellow athlete from Mohali Swaran Singh in increasing the medal tally as later won silver medal in shot put in above 60 category at this Asian meet.

Born in April 1919, Pritam Singh migrated from Rawalpindi (Pakistan) in 1947. He did his graduation from Garden College, Rawalpindi. He said that it was only after he turned 80, that he decided to take part in athletic competitions.

He said, once, when while walking across the Rose Garden here, he came across a banner inviting senior citizens for a walk. Suddenly it struck him that he could also take part in the competition.

Pritam Singh said from that day onwards, he had participated in all major athletic meets held in India.

But the Bangkok achievement was his best and made him aspire for more such medals.

His daily schedule included a five kilometer walk, then running and cooling down.

He had the company of many other veteran athletes and junior athletes for many of whom he was an inspiration and motivation.

Sarwan Singh, a former Sports Authority of India Athletics coach, who retired in year 2002, said that Pritam Singh never wanted to take part in the Asian meet but they all encouraged him.

Pritam Singh said apart from a little hearing problem, he did not have any other ailment which normally people of his age get in. Pritam Singh added that he never remained dependent on vehicles for commuting and used them only for necessary work.

He was of the view that Mohali had a lot of potential for grooming athletes but sadly, enough there was no proper sports stadium in this industrial city.

When asked, why he spent from his own pocket for going abroad for the Asian meet, Pritam Singh said athletics was his passion.

But on being asked, if he would take part in the World Veterans Athletics meet to be held in Spain next year, he said who had that much money for taking part in the above meet?
