Vision loss on rise among newborns, says doctor
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 13
Lack of adequate care of the newborn babies in the country is leading to increasing cases of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) among the higher weight babies in India.

Expressing concern on the drifting trend of the disease in India, which has so far been associated with low birthweight babies across the globe, Dr M.R. Dogra of the Department of Ophthalmology, PGI, said the PGI would now study such cases to find concrete causes for the occurrence of such cases.

“The care of newborn babies is so variable in our country that the babies who weigh more than 1,250 gm at the time of birth too develop the disease, which leads to total blindness, if not treated in time,” said the doctor.

After the preliminary studies, the doctors here have attributed the cause of such a trend on increasing infections among babies at the time of birth, blood transfusion, anaemia, and respiratory distress leading to the ROP, where the blood vessels originating from the brain leading to the eyes develop defect and the child loses vision.

“I have presented these cases at various international conferences, which have enthused a lot of curiosity among experts from across the globe. Now we are going to find out the exact causes of the occurrence of the disease among the higher weight babies,” added Dr Dogra.
