Degree behind bars

Jaspal Bhatti

The Beur Jail in Patna has for the first time designated an examination centre by the Indira Gandhi National Open University. This can be an excellent facility for the jail inmates to get degrees. Those who are in the jail by circumstances and wish to mend their ways can now become scholars and find respectable positions in the society.

But there are people in the jail who are there for different reasons. There are some who want to make their careers in crime or politics. For them, the only worthwhile degree is the proof that they were in jail for a certain number of years. A specialised degree course on jailbreaks can be of great interest to these prisoners.

One might even hear a Don showing off, "My son has recently completed his Civil Engineering in tunnel digging from high security jails". There must be others who must be happy at his brother getting admission in a certificate course in giving threats — brother was very soft-spoken. I wanted his language to be rough and abusive".

The former Director of IGNOU who will conduct the exams says that some of the prisoners drop out when they get a bail.

Jokes apart, once this jail education becomes popular, the inmates may not even leave it after getting bail. In the coming time, law-abiding citizens may even queue up for getting admission in these jail colleges as education outside is going to be very expensive.
