Charm of protest
Jaspal Bhatti

Snake charmers in Orissa have threatened to release 5000 poisonous snakes into the Orissa Assembly premises if the government did not heed to their demands. Immediate steps must be taken to stall their moves, as this could prove dangerous for the innocent reptiles. Imagine if a harmless snake bites a poisonous politician, it could prove fatal for the poor snake.

At a press conference recently the snake charmers alleged that the forest officers had been harassing them on the grounds of the Wildlife Protection Act. Whatever their demands and grievances may be their threat to release the snakes is unique. If their agitation is successful, tomorrow elephant owners can also come out with similar ideas to let loose their elephants to have their demands accepted.

You might have heard several times of sweepers throwing their garbage on the roads to lodge their protest. Electricity employees may switch off power, and the postman can threaten to deliver the letter at the wrong address. Every union has its own nuisance value to pressurise the authorities.

Once I meet a union leader of the Electricity Department who wanted to go on a strike by disrupting power supply. I asked him if it was the fear of the police that was stopping him from doing so. He said the problem was that there was a power cut going, so what are we going to disrupt.
