Innovative ideas to dress up your resume
R.K. Manuja

A 'resume' is like your preliminary interview, in absentia. Here you and your interviewer are not facing each other. Your 'resume ' therefore, needs to be as impressive as possible so that after going through it one may not be able to resist the temptation of inviting you for an interview. Giving a new format to your resume has become all the more essential in this age of tough competition in every walk of life. Along with being impressive, the resume has also to be fully truthful, thereby eliminating any chances of your being caught on wrong foot. Here are a few suggestions for writing your resume.

The layout

At the top of the sheet, mention 'reference of the advertisement' in a separate line and the post applied for with code (if any) in a separate line, both at the centre of the sheet.

The resume should be correctly and neatly typed on a fresh white sheet of A-4 size. At least 5 cm margin should be left on all four sides to enable the interviewer to make jottings as per his convenience. Only those words should be used in the resume, the spellings and meanings of which are very well-known to you. The types used should be simple such as 'Roman', ' Times', ' Universe' and the like. Font size should be 16 points for the title and a minimum12 points for the text. For headings or for highlighting particular contents bold types may be used. In the same way, italic font should be used for foreign words and phrases like 'inter alia', 'ipso facto' etc. The 'resume' should be of one page. For details such as education, employment, publications etc. separate sheets may be attached as 'Annexure-1', 'Annexure - 2' and so on.

The title

The terms 'Resume', 'CV', ' Bio-Data' have become very common. As such, new and attractive terms may be used such as 'ME', 'KNOW ME', 'ABOUT ME', 'PORTRAIT', 'PROFILE', 'REFLECTOR', 'HIGHLIGHTER', 'MIRROR' etc.

The summary

Immediately below the title, a shortest possible summary of your resume should be given in a box. Although it is not necessary to do so, if you want, you may give captions to the box like 'to sum up', 'in brief', 'in a nutshell', 'to be precise', 'essence' etc.

The text

Give the text a new look by mentioning "I am', 'People know me as' instead of subheads like 'name', 'born on'; 'Having come into existence' in place of 'date of birth'; 'Can be contacted at' in place of address, residence phone and mobile no. Mention academic, professional, technical qualifications, job training etc, under subheads like 'My education and training', the total work experience under 'Having looked after' (mention the nature of assignments handled by you); and use subheads like 'Feel very comfortable with' for your area of specialisation.

General information

Here mention the state of your health, physique, personality, travel, hobby etc.

The emoluments

In place of plainly stating your present emoluments and expectations, you may mention "I am already rich by (mention your present monthly remuneration) and expect to be richer by… (mention amount of jump you expect).

Word of caution

It has become a common practice to exaggerate about oneself. Mentioning any topical activity as 'Hobby" has also become a fashion. Please beware. Neither exaggerate about yourself nor mention any activity as your hobby about which you cannot convince the interviewer.

Your e-mail ID needs to be given only if you have regular access to your e-mail box. This precaution has to be taken because nowadays, prospective employers prefer to contact on the mobile phone or through e-mail.
