In high spirits

A recent study conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says, "When used in excess, alcohol damages brain structure and function". My alcoholic friends have their own theory. They feel that they are most creative after downing three or four pegs. Some of my friends show amazing creativity in the English language and use idioms and adjectives which cannot be found in any dictionary of the world. Some reveal in-depth knowledge of history disclosing facts that Akbar, Babar or Nehru would not have even known about himself.

I discussed the matter with my doctor friends at a party. They declared that if a person drinks in moderation, alcohol could prove to be a medicine. The problem is how to set this limit.

The measure is different for different alcoholics. Our music director H. M. Singh Kuki takes two large pegs of rum to decide whether he should drink or observe a dry day. He needs a couple of drinks more to take any decision.

I asked my journalist friend P.S Batra who has a great respect for every brand of liquor, "Don’t you think consuming alcohol daily could affect your memory?" He replied confidently, "Not at all. Ask me the telephone number of any wine shop in the city, I remember all of them by heart."
