500 examined at heart check-up camp

Panchkula, November 20
More than 500 persons were examined at a two-day free heart check-up camp organised by Mahamai Mansa Devi Charitable Bhandara Committee that concluded today at the Mansa Devi Shrine Complex. While 265 patients were examined yesterday, as many as 270 patients were examined today. They were checked for their blood pressure, body weight, blood sugar, and ECG tests were conducted. A team of doctors led by Dr Sanjay Mittal from Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, New Delhi. The patients who were detected with heart risk problems were advised preventive measures and further treatment. Mr Bimal Jain, President of the Committee, said that they had organised a similar camp in February this year and over 400 persons were examined.

Dental check-up camp:- A free dental check-up camp was organised by Guru Granth Sahib Sewa Samiti, Chandigarh, at Bal Niketan today. Over 60 inmates - destitute children and abandoned children, and staff of the camp were examined for various dental problems. Dr Jasbir Singh from IMA House, Chandigarh examined the patients in a mobile dental clinic for cavities, deposits and swollen gums. Medicines were given free of cost, to the patients.

Blood testing camp:- A blood testing camp was organised by Piya Sharma Charitable Trust at Rajiv Colony today, under a WHO sanctioned project. As many as 80 children were examined by a team of doctors from Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh. The children were examined for anaemia, Vitamin A deficiency, lymph node problems and other nutritional deficiencies.

Meeting:- A meeting of the Jagrit Brahmin Sabha was held here recently under the chairmanship of Mr R N Sharma. The Sabha condemned the arrest of the Kanchi seer by the Tamil Nadu police and demanded that he be released at the earliest. The members of the Sabha said that the arrest of the seer had hurt the feelings of the Hindus.

Symposium on cardiac care concludes

Mohali, November 20
The two-day international symposium on lifestyle diseases and emerging trends in cardiac care ended at Fortis Hospital here today. Dr Dhiraj Narula, cardiologist, Asian Heart Hospital, Mumbai, spoke on sudden cardiac death and added that the disease affected about 2.5 million Indians every year. Statics show that only 2 per cent out of 15 per cent survive the sudden cardiac death even after getting admitted to a hospital immediately.

Dr G.S. Kalra, cardiologist, told the gathering about how to deal with the problem of high cholesterol by modifying the lifestyle and the role of new, drugs. Dr K.K. Talwar, Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh, also spoke on the occasion.

Dr Gilbert Mudge, cardiologist, Brigham and Women’s, Boston, talked on recent developments on managing damaged hearts. Whereas Dr Suresh Joshi, cardiac surgeon, Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, gave details of minimal invasive cardiac surgery.

Yogita, Toheed overall best in athletics

Yogita of the Sports Complex, Sector 7 here, in the under-14 girls’ section and Mohammad Toheed in the under-14 boys’ section were adjudged overall best in the Bharat Petroleum Chandigarh State Athletics Championship-2004 in various age groups. The championship concluded today at the Sports Complex, Sector 7. Mr GM Vats, Territory Manager, Bharat Petroleum gave away the prizes and also announced a financial assistance of Rs 15,000 for the athletes.

Others who were declared overall winners are, boys under 16-Naveen, boys under18-Kuldeep Singh, boys under 20-Hervinder Singh, men-Jaswinder Singh. In girls’ section, those adjudged winners are, under16-Talwinderjit Kaur, Under 18-Reena Pal, girls under 20-Pawandeep Kaur and women-Veena Yadav.

JJ sports win

JJ Sports XI defeated the Mohali Cricket Association Xi by just one wicket in the second Lieut-Colonel IS Deol Memorial League Cricket Tournament played here today at the Sector 16 Cricket stadium.

Brief scores: MCA XI:117 runs for five (Sukhwinder Tinku 50, Baldeep 27, Gagandeep 10, Harinder 2 or four).

JJ Sports XI: 118 runs for nine (Vikram 28 n.o., Manav Asopa 19, Kulwinder 16, Umesh Kaira 12, Gagandeep 2 for 22, Gauravjeet 2 or 24).

Saupin’s beat St John’s

Superb bowling by Aman Gupta, who claimed five wickets for just 14 runs ,enabled Saupin’s school, Panchkula, to beat St John’s ‘B’ school, Chandigarh by one wicket in the ongoing ICL Champions Trophy Cricket Tournament played here today at the Satluj cricket grounds, Panchkula.

Brief scores: St John’s-26: 98 runs all out in 23.5 overs (Sharanjit 43 n.o., Aman Gupta 5 for 14, Ankur Vaid 3 for 22).

Saupin’s-Panchkula: 99 runs for nine in 23.1 overs (Aditya 14, Suraj Matta 17, Gaurav 4 for 17, Ravipritpal Singh 2 for 20, Shabaaz Singh 2 for two).

Cricket tourney

DSM Anti-Infections India Limited downed Spice Telecom by 42 runs in the Pool A league tie of the CRY Cadence Corporate Cricket Challenge Tournament played here today at the Sector 3 Sports Complex, Panchkula. Devender Singh of the DSM was also declared the man of the match.

Brief scores: Devender Singh 44, Jatin Dudeja 27, Yogender Bhatia 27, Kulwinder Singh 24 n.o., Sanjeev Sharma 2 for 47, Rajil 2 for 14.

Spice Telecom: 131 runs all out in 23.4 overs (Sanjeev Sharma 26, Vivek Pathania 16 n.o., Naresh Sharma 4 for 30, Devender Singh 3 for 19.

The annual sports day of the Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 45 was organised today at the Sports Complex, Sector 46. The day began with an impressive march past by students of the school, followed by colourful drills, taekwondo and various athletic events. The Chief guest Ms Rajesh Chaudhary, District Education Officer, appreciated the performance of the children and applauded the school management for giving a thrust to sports activities also. The function ended with National Anthem.

Selection trials

The Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration, will hold the selection trials to select Chandigarh women’s team for its participation in the XXXth National Sports Festival for Women to be held at Sangrur from December 13 to 16.The trials for volleyball will be held at the Sports Complex, Sector 7, on November 22 at 4 pm while for kho-kho the trials will be held at Government Model High School, Sector 42, also on November 22 at 4 pm.

PU surges ahead in inter-university tennis tourney

Harsimran Kaur of Panjab University scored 6-0, 6-1 to win over Ruchita Sethi of Gujarat University during quarterfinal of All- India Inter University Women Tennis meet at Panjab University on Saturday.

Panjab University surged ahead in the All-India Inter-University Tennis (women) Tournament played here PU campus today. In a nail biting tie against Gujarat University, PU won 3-2.

Neha Singh and Harsimran Kaur were instrumental in clinching the tie in their favour. Deepanwita Chakarworty of Gujarat University excelled from her team as she won both her singles tie. In another tie, Mumbai University clinched an easy win against Delhi University with scores 3-0.

First tie: Panjab University, Chandigarh b Gujarat University, Ahmedabad 3-2 (Neha Singh b Ruchita Shetty 6-0,6-2; Harsimran Kaur lost to Deepanwita Chakarworty 3-6,2-6; doubles: Neha and Harsimran b Ruchita and Deepanwita 6-2,6-1.

Reverse singles: Neha lost to Deepanwita 0-6,4-6; Harsimran b Ruchita 6-0,6-1.

IInd Tie: Mumbai University, Mumbai b Delhi University, Delhi 3-0 (Isha Lakhani b Parul Goswami 4-6,6-3,6-1; Krushmi Chheda b Vishika 6-2,6-1; Isha and Krushmi b Parul and Vishika 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).

Championship

The 48th Inter-Services Weightlifting Championship will be held at 3 Base Repair Depot (3 BRD) Air Force Station, here from November 22 to 25.

Four teams, the Army Red, Army Green, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy will take part in the championship. Forty four weightlifters will compete from various weight categories.

The Air Officer Commanding 3 BRD, Air Commander S.P.S. Virk will inaugurate the meet at 3 pm on Monday.

Basketball

Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, and New Public School, Sector 18, bagged the under 14 and under 12 boys title by beating New Public School, Sector 18, by 29-22 and St Xavier’s, Sector 44, Chandigarh by 32-24 respectively at the Emily Gosain Memorial Sub-Junior Basketball Tournament which concluded here today at St Xavier’s High School, Panchkula.

Under14: SPS-41 b NPS-18 (29-22) (half time18-16) scorers, winners-Gagandeep 25, Aman-two; losers-Amridner15,Vineet- four.

Under 12: NPS-18 b St Xavier’s-44 32-24 (half time 12-14).scorers for winners-Praveen 20, Satan12, losers-Angad six, Abhimanyu- eight.

Tournament

The Fourth Saupin’s Inter-School Carrom Tournament will be held from November 26 to 28 at Saupin’s School, Sector 9, Panchkula. The three-day meet is being held under the aegis of Panchkula District Carrom Association.

There will be three categories, classes upto V, classes VI to VIII and classes IX onwards. Entries close on November 23.

Throwball tourney

In the fourth Phase of Inter-School Tournament, held at Government Model High School, Sector 36, Chandigarh, the GGMSSS Sector 8 beat GMSSS Sector 23 (scored 25-17) in the throwball under 17 age group.

In Karate, GGMSSS Sector-8, won overall trophy under-19 age group today, Sandeep, Nisha, Deepika, Neeraj and Malika were the members of the winning team.
