Remixes darkest phase of music, says Ravi
Wedding
ambience will certainly be incomplete without a sprinkling of fun. ‘Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai’ or the soulful ‘vidai’ music of ‘Babul ki duaen leti ja’. Times have changed but many children still derive a lot of delight by humming ‘Chanda mama door ke’ or ‘Hum bhi agar bache hote’.
Meet Ravi, music director, who is full of energy and can talk for hours about music. When you talk to him, you can easily feel his passion for music. He is in the city in connection with the Rafi Memorial Nite which will be held tomorrow at the Tagore Theatre. He will be the chief guest at the function. He is 78 years old but age doesn’t seem to fail his enthusiasm. “ One should have devotion and passion for his or her work”, he opines. Ravi has composed music for about 200 feature films. Many Hindi, Malayalam, Punjabi, Gujarati, Telugu, and Kannada movies resonate with his musical strains. His ‘been’ music, immortalised in “Nagin,” still casts a spell. Interestingly, he played it on the harmonium. “Music can dissolve all barriers of language. I don’t understand Malayalam at all but whenever gave music for Malayalam movies, it instantly became a hit. I have received so many awards for these movies”, Ravi said without any tinge of pride. At present, Ravi is busy giving music for Malayalam movies. Giving musical super hits is something which happens to him in routine. Ask him about his favourite singer, the first name which he mentions is of Rafi. “Another Rafi cannot happen. He was a phenomenon. His magnanimous heart made him unforgettable. Many tried to copy his voice but no one could match his calibre", Ravi said. Composing and recording devotional songs, ghazals and patriotic songs is definitely no child’s play. Apart from giving music, he has penned many lyrics and sung many songs for films. His versatility and imagination has always seen him through. Talking about the latest remixes, he said,” This is the darkest phase of the music industry. These songs do not have any life. One thing I must say is that music directors should not touch the old songs. At least bring your own creativity into play”. He loves experimenting with different sounds and sophisticated electronic instruments. The refreshing touch which we hear often emanates from a mind which revels in experimentation. The list of awards he has won and his achievements is quite long. But it is the title of Padmashree which was bestowed on him by the President of India, which he cherishes most. |
Anwar Hussein to be honoured today

He sang many hit songs ‘Mohabbat ab tizarat ban gayi hai’, ‘Teri aankhon ki chahat mein’ and Aag, hawa, miiti, pani’. He admires Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar besides Sunidhi Chuahan and Udit Narayan. While talking about his experiences in the music industry he said, “Today the music industry is moving at a fast pace. I gave many hit songs and then shifted my base abroad. But when I came back I realised that many newcomers had not only established themselves but had acquired a formidable reputation”. Now he is coming up with his own album ‘Tohfa’ which will soon be
released. |
