‘Waiting for Godot’ to be staged in Punjabi
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, November 15
Media Artists will stage “Waiting for Godot” tomorrow at Nehru Sidhant Kendra here. The play has been adapted into Punjabi. Media Artists had earlier staged the Punjabi adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”. “Waiting for Godot”, written by Samuel Beckett, has been adapted into Punjabi by Balram. In the one of its kind experiments in the theatre, the play will be jointly directed by Balram and Sanjay Solanki, both alumni of the Theatre and Television Department of Punjabi University, Patiala.

Though difficult, and sometimes baffling, “Waiting for Godot” is one of the most important works of our time. The play, called the quintessential play of the twentieth century, revolutionised theatre in the twentieth century and had a very deep influence on generations of succeeding dramatists.

The play was originally written in French and later Beckett only translated it into English. It was staged in London in 1955 and in the United States in 1956 and has been produced world wide. The play has come to be considered an essential example of ‘Theatre of the Absurd’.

By way of plot, the story is of two tramps, waiting by a sickly looking tree for arrival of Godot. They quarrel, make up, contemplate, contemplate suicide, try to sleep, eat a carrot etc. Two other characters appear, a master and a slave. Then a young boy arrives to say that Mr Gordot will not come today, but will come tomorrow. The play is a development of the title — “Waiting for Godot”.
