Students vow not to use crackers

Chandigarh, November 11
Divali celebrations in schools here yesterday were marked by cultural functions showcasing the Indian tradition. Songs and dances were performed with enthusiasm and celebrations continued all through the day.

The festive spirit reigned St Peter’s Secondary School, Sector 37, where the school compound brimmed with colour, music, mirth and joy. The programme began with a short speech on Divali by the school Head Girl followed by tiny-tots and students of senior classes dancing to Punjabi numbers and Hindi songs.

School walls were decorated with anti-cracker slogans like “A Divali full of noise, can give you a life of darkness” and “Forsake crackers, embrace safety”. The Peterites pledged not to use crackers from this Divali and enjoy the light and warmth of candles, with good music and delicious food.

A day prior to the Divali celebrations, the students visited Old Age Home, Sector 15, with gifts, sweets and candles.

Tiny-tots of Shishu Niketan, Sector 22, painted colourful earthen lamps and made greeting cards to celebrate the festival of lights. In a room, decorated with candles and streamers, they danced to peppy numbers and presented a cultural show.

Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here organised a ‘Divali fest’ today which was inaugurated by the Director, Public Instruction (S), Mr D.S. Mangat. A cultural programme was held on the occasion. The school campus bore festive look as students installed a number of stalls, including game and handicraft stalls.

An anti-crackers rally was also held by the students of the ECO club which was flagged off by the Principal, Mrs Kuldevi Yadav.

Students of different schools in the city are playing a crucial role in spreading the message of ' Say no to crackers'. With a day left for the festival of lights, students of Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 37-C, carrying placards and banners took out a rally in the city. The rally was organised by the NSS unit of the school in coordination with the Environment Society. The students pledged not to burst crackers and also dissuade others. The Principal of the school, Ms Jasminder Kaur, flagged off the rally.

In another rally taken out by students of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37-B, students urged the city residents to contribute in checking air pollution. The message of ' Say no crackers' was spread through innovative slogans. The Eco Club of the school organised a talk on the issue.

At Government Senior Secondary School, Karsan village, the Environment Society of Chandigarh in collaboration with the UP Welfare Association, organised an anti-crackers rally.

The members of the Eco Friendly Club of Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, Sector 41, took part in a rally in the Sector 37 market. As many as 200 students participated in the procession to bring awareness and educate the public on the issue.

To celebrate the festival, students of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, took part in a number of activities. The students of Classes V to VIII took part in 'diya' decorating competition and the students of Classes IX to XII participated in poster-making competition. The other items organised on the occasion were group songs, dances, skits and speeches.

ambala: The students of DAV Public School, Model Town, Ambala city, celebrated Divali by lighting lamps on Thursday. Regional Director Reena Nagrath and school Principal Meenakshi Dogra inaugurated the Divali fete.

Ms Nagrath said the students should keep up the spirit of Divali by spreading joy to the world through their deeds. Himanshi, Parul, Ripu Daman, Gunjan, Prabhleen and Ananya who were winners of different contests at the fate.

Divali was celebrated in PKR Jain Public School on Thursday. School Principal Jyotsana Sachdeva lighted the traditional lamp. A cultural programme was also organised. School committee president Bharat Bhushan Jain, manager Bhushan Jain and treasurer Munish Jain spoke on the occasion.

PANCHKULA: Students of Blue Bird School, Sector 16, celebrated Divali by holding inter-house activities, including card making, candle decoration, candle making and rangoli competition. Winners were presented with certificates. Lakshmi puja was also organised.

The Principal of the school, Ms Ravi Bhatnagar, lighted the lamp. Students presented a dance and recited Ganesh vandana. Teachers recited bhajans.

At Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Chandi Mandir, students participated in a declamation contest. The Principal, Ms Narinder Mohini, urged the students to adopt the principles of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru. This was followed by a community lunch and a football match.

Delhi Public School, Pinjore, organised a rangoli-making, card-designing contest. It was decorated with earthen lamps and candles and prayers were held. Students were urged to keep away from crackers and light up their Divali with exchanging greetings.

Mohali: Spring Dales Public School, Phase IX, celebrated Divali and Children’s Day here today on the school premises.

Students participated in a rally against bursting of crackers. Later, they presented dances and skits on literacy. A group of young children performed an action song holding earthen lamps in their hands.

Ms Jaspal Kaur, Principal the school, addressed the students and praised them for presenting a good show.

Students of Swami Ram Tirath Public School celebrated Divali on Thursday. A series of competitions were held in the school. Students participated in card making, candle making and 'diya' decoration. The school building was decorated with garlands prepared by the students.

Earlier, a special morning assembly devoted to children's day was held. The fun-filled day concluded with the community lunch for students.

Yesterday, the birth anniversary of Swami Ram Tirath was celebrated in the school. Students put up a colourful cultural programme, including a recitation of bhajan composed by swamiji. A skit titled, 'Deaf and dumb', was also presented by the students. The enthusiastic performance of giddha by nursery kids enthralled the audience.

Students of Golden Bells Public School here celebrated Children’s Day and Divali on Thursday. The programme started with speeches to enlighten students with the importance of the festival. Children guised as flowers spread fragrance and smiles. Students posed as famous personalities in a mock conference. Tiny tots participated in a host of other fun-filled events through the day.

School holds contests

Students of the local Shemrock Senior Secondary School today held a function in connection with Children’s Day. The day began with a cross-country race. The winners were honoured. Drawing and rangoli-making competitions were also organised.

College commemorates installation of Guru Granth Sahib

Three-day celebrations to commemorate the 400th year of the installation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib organised by the Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26, concluded, here yesterday.

The function was marked by a kavi darbar which was convened by Mr Hari Singh Tachak. Participants from across the region recited religious verse.

Sikh scholar, Rabinder S. Masroor from Kurukshetra University recited his composition “Do neeh pathar ek mehal de”. Mr R.S. Josh from Sangrur spoke on Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Students of the college recited a vaar.

The function was chaired by Raja Harminder Singh, Member, Sikh Education Society. The concluding session saw a display of gatka by a team of professionals.

Virasat celebrated: Enthralling cultural performances by students of GGDSD College, Sector 32, marked Virasat Prof. Roshan Lal Verma Memorial Fest held at the college, on Wednesday.

Setting the mood with a soulful bhajan, jhoomar, kathak, songs, mime, giddha, bhangra and other items showcased the talent of the students. “Ek Maa Do Mulk”, a touching play dealing with the trauma of partition, moved the audience.

Mr Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, MLA, Parliamentary Secretary, Agriculture and Cooperation, was the chief guest. He remembered his days as a student of the college. He donated Rs 1 lakh to the college. Earlier, he was welcomed by the college principal, Dr AC Vaid.

PU extends date for submitting forms

Chandigarh, November 11
Panjab University has extended the last date of receipt of examination forms of private candidates without late fee for under-graduate and post-graduate examination to be held in April 2005 from November 16 to 20.

The decision has been taken in view of holidays in connection with Devali. The counter at the new enquiry office of the university would however, remain open on November 13 and 15 to receive the forms.

However, even though today was supposed to be an “open day” for counters of the university, forms for private candidates were exhausted early in the morning. Anxious parents and students had to return without the forms and were told to return to the counter on November 15. TNS

School starts free classes

Sharda Sarvhitkari Senior Secondary School, Sector 40, Chandigarh, has started free classes for 40 minutes on Indian mythology and ancient texts.
The first discourse on the origin, appearances and life of Lord Ganesha was delivered by the founder member of the Pratibimb, Mr Satya Pal.

More than 50 students of different classes attended the class. The Pratibimb, a social organisation, has offered to hold free classes on Indian mythology in any school or institute.

A clarification

Reacting to a news item 'Stone crushers stifle tiny tots' published in the Chandigarh Tribune on November 4, Mr S.G. Saxena, executive secretary of Shiv Mandir Shivalik Bharti Public School, Mubarikpur, made it clear that the school was being run by Shivalik Bharati, an Educational and Cultural Society, Chandigarh.

The land was given by the Shiv Mandir Khera Society after passing a resolution on February 14, 1999. The main objective of the school, a branch of the Shivalik Bharati Senior Secondary School, Dera Bassi, was to impart education in the untapped areas, claimed Mr Saxena.

He further clarified that the school was not being run from a temple building. The building was constructed by the society.

7-year jail for four Nigerians

Panchkula, November 11
Convicting four Nigerians in a case of drug trafficking, a local court today sentenced them to imprisonment for seven years. A fine of Rs 30,000 each was also imposed on the convicts. Another accused, Fread, a resident of Zimbabwe was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, besides a fine of Rs 10,000.

They were earlier booked by the police on charges of drug trafficking. The prosecution had alleged that brown sugar worth Rs 1 crore in the international market was recovered from all accused — Oobinwuijc Daniel, Anthony, Francis, Fread and Emanuel. While Fread hails from Zimbabawe, the other four are Nigerians.

While four of the accused — Oobinwuijc Daniel, Anthony, Francis and Fread were arrested on the night of July 20, 2001, their fifth accomplice reportedly jumped from the first floor hideout in Sector 9 to escape arrest and was admitted to the PGI, Chandigarh. Packets of brown sugar weighing 250 gms each were recovered from them.

Discharged: The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Gulab Singh, has discharged the three partners of Vivek Document Centre, who were booked by the police in September this year on charges of cheating and forgery.

The three persons, Vivek, Vishal and Kiran, were booked by the police on charges of being in possession of fake stamp papers. The police had raided their premises in Sector 11 market and arrested them after a search operation.

Since the police could not furnish any proof to support its allegations, the trio were discharged by the court today.

Divali will herald the release of big films like Yash Chopra’s cross border love story “Veer-Zaara”, a digitally enhanced ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ in all colour, Subhash Ghai’s ‘Aitraaz’ and Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Naach’. Two love legends Salim-Anarkali and Veer-Zaara are ready to clash at the box office today.

In ‘Veer-Zaara’ Yash Chopra calls the shots once again on the eve of Divali. The filmmaker directs the team of his son Aditya Chopra’s ‘Mohabbatein’ — Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta play the female leads.

Manoj Bajpai also stars in the film. Rs 30 crore ‘Veer-Zaara’ propagate the message that love knows no boundaries. Yash Chopra has dug out old compositions of late music maestro Madan Mohan for the songs. The songs have been recreated by Sanjiv Kohli, son of Madan Mohan. The film opens today at Piccadilly and Kiran, Chandigarh, Fun Republic, Mani Majra and K.C., Panchkula.

Mukta Arts will release ‘Aitraaz’. Abbas-Mastaan teams up first time with Subhash Ghai’s Mukta Arts. ‘Aitraaz’ explores different facets of man-woman relationship of love, lust and obsession. Akashay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and Amrish Puri play main roles in ‘Aitraaz’.

Sameer has penned the lyrics for Himesh Reshammiya. The film will hit the screen today at Nirman, Chandigarh, and Fun Republic, Mani Majra.

Newly restored K. Asif’s ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ is ready for grand revival today at Neelam, Chandigarh.

It has romantic dialogues and action. For the first time in the history of cinema an entire film has been colour corrected. Real Dolby surround system has been created for this film. Naushad and Uttam Singh has jointly re-recorded the music.

After ‘Vaastu Shastra’ Ram Gopal Varma strikes back with eye-opener of a musical ‘Naach’. Another ‘factory’ production with Abhishek Bachchan playing a struggler. Antara Mali is a choreographer in ‘Naach’ and she has given some bold shots like those of Urmila Matondkar in ‘Rangeela’. Ram Gopal Varma has directed this film with Kiran Reddy. The Rs 6-crore film ‘Naach’ is presented by Saharaone Motion Pictures. It will be released today at Batra, Chandigarh, and Fun Republic, Mani Majra.

Lookalike of Bollywood actor

Atma RaoAtma Rao, a resident of Sirsa, is known as Hrithik Roshan in Mumbai. He is a double of the Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan. He learned dance to match Hrithik’s.

He has studied up to Class X and then moved to Mumbai to cash in on his looks. Now he does stage shows across the country. He has also participated in Channel V shows, including ‘Ek Ka Teen’, ‘Tunna Bhai MBBS’ and ‘Koi Hil Gaya’ and “Fully Faltoo” on MTV. Atma will also be seen in a serial “Zindagi Hum Shaklon Ki” on Doordarshan soon.

Plea to make pulse polio drive a success

Panchkula, November 11
The Deputy Commissioner, Ms Neelam P. Kasni, has called upon all officers of the district administration and NGOs to extend their full cooperation to make the Pulse Polio Immunisation programme, scheduled to be held on November 21, a success.

She was presiding over a meeting to review the arrangements of the pulse polio programme made by the district health authorities last evening.

Ms Kasni said that 71,000 children were below the age of 5 years . She said that 320 booths would be set up in the district and 1,280 workers had been deputed for the job. Besides Health Department workers of the ICDS, voluntary workers, staff of the Education Department and students would also be associated with the campaign. She also informed that 58 supervisors had been deputed to supervise the programme.

The Civil Surgeon, Dr Satvir Chaudhary, said that polio drops would be given from 8 am to 4 pm. He said that seven transit teams and 13 mobile teams would be set up. Polio drops would also be administered on November 22 and November 23 by the Health Department workers, who would go from door-to-door.

Intikhab Alam, a former Pakistan cricket coach, and Gerhard Rach of Germany, India's hockey coach, today advised the students to respect their teachers. Both spoke during the prize distribution function of Molly Carver Memorial Sports Carnival at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, here today. Intikhab, who has been appointed coach-cum-manager of the Punjab Ranji team, said the right attitude for each player would put them on top.

Gerhard and Intikhab obliged the students by giving them their autographs. Gerhard also gave tips to the trainees of St Stephen’s Hockey Academy.

The following are the winners in various sports competitions: cricket: Guru Nanak Public School 1, St Stephen’s School ‘A’ 2; football: St Stephen’s School 'A' 1, St Xavier’s School 2; hockey: Ex-Stephenians 1, Government Model-35 2; and basketball: New Public School-18 1, St Stephen’s 'A' 2.

Gymnastics meet: The National Sub-junior Gymnastics Championship in under-12 and under-14 sections in girls and boys sections and senior rythmic championship for senior section will begin here tomorrow at Shivalik Public School, Mohali. Giving the details of the meet, Mr D.S. Bedi, Director-Principal of the host school, said more than 400 gymnasts from all over India has converged to Mohali to take part in this championship. He said along with sub-junior section, the senior section will have rythmic gymnastics event. Both boarding and lodging arrangements have been made on the school premises.

St. Joseph’s win: St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, bagged the UT Inter-School Fencing (under-14 boys) championship. Second place in this section went in favour of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, while third place goes to Government Model Senior Secondary School,  Sector 33.

Appointed: Dr J.P.S. Sidhu, Joint Director (Sports) UT, has been appointed the psychologist of the Indian hockey team for the Champions Trophy to be held in Lahore from December 4 to12. As per the communication received by Mr K. Jothikumaran, Secretary-General of the IHF, Sidhu has been asked to join the ongoing national coaching camp for the senior hockey team in progress at Chandigarh till November 30.

Meanwhile, Mr Sidhu was also given the additional charge to coordinate the school sports which is being held under the aegis of the UT Education Department.

Basketball tourney: St Xavier’s High School, Sector 20, Panchkula, will hold the inaugural Emily Gosain Memorial Sub-junior Basketball Tournament for boys from November 18 to 20 on the school premises. Entries close on November 16.

18 cops promoted

Police personnel today got a Divali bonanza with 18 of them getting ad-hoc promotions to the posts of Sub Inspector (SIs) and Assistant Sub Inspector (ASIs). ASIs Surat Ram, Gurbachan Singh, Raghbir Singh, Bishna Ram and Tarlochan Singh have been promoted as SIs.

Head Constables Mehar Kaur, Gurbax Singh, Sat Guru, Mahi Pal, Jai Dev, Rajinder Parshad, Rajinder Singh, Budhi Ram, Prem Singh, Pritam Singh, Narinder Singh, Giarsi Lal and Tilak Raj have been promoted as ASIs.

These personnel had completed the required training in the Phillaur Police Training School a long time back, but the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) could not consider their cases.

Inspector General of Police Rajesh Kumar today gave them promotions subject to confirmation from the DPC.
