Beekeepers’ problems discussed

Ludhiana, November 8
The Directorate of Extension Education held a meeting with progressive beekeepers of Punjab at the PAU today. Mr Hardev Singh Ghanaur, secretary of the club, discussed the proceedings of a regional workshop of beekeeping awareness, organised by the National Bee Board in Doraha recently. He said the executive committee of the club would meet Dr Manohar Singh Gill, Rajya Sabha Member, for the course of beekeeping in the state.

Dr Pardeep Kumar Chhuneja, an Entomologist, shared some recent problems of beekeepers, including reports of varroa mite and the operations to be adopted in the coming month. He also shared the current global wholesale prices of honey from Indian and other Asian countries available on the internet.

Dr Chhuneja also cautioned the beekeepers against the use of antibiotics and other chemicals in honey bee colonies.

Dr Gurjant Singh Gatoria, senior entomologist, discussed the methods of managing varroa and stressed on making colonies stronger rather than going after numbers.

Dr Gurmeet Singh from Agmark said that getting Agmark for agricultural products is a very simple process and gave tips on honey marketing.

Mr J.S. Tiwana talked about direct marketing, which will go a long way in employment generation. Proposing a vote of thanks, Mr H.S. Shergill, said the next meeting would be held on December 1 at PAU.

Vigilance week observed

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had decided to observe Vigilance Awareness Week from November 1 to 6 in the memory of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Kitchlu Nagar, conducted different activities in this connection.

Students were briefed about corruption , its causes and factors facilitating it. The students were made aware of their rights and duties as consumers. Students of Classes III, IV and V participated in group discussion, while students of Classes VI, VII and VIII participated in declamation contests, quiz contest, extempore speeches and group discussion. Students of classes were given a brief outline about the objectives of celebrating the Vigilance Awareness Week. The students eagerly participated in answering prepared set of questions. They participated in slogan-writing contest and thought of some interesting ones like-Corruption -a big problem with no reduction’ and ‘Corruption is the backbone of India’s weekness.’

Master Tara Singh College holds anti-pollution rally

Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women organised poster, collage and model making and story and poetry writing competition on the theme 'pollution control awareness' on the college premises. It was followed by anti-pollution rally today. Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, MP, was the chief guest on the second day of the two-day programme.

Prior to the commencement of the rally ,the chief guest, Mr Sharanjit S. Dhillon, distributed prizes among participants. He delivered a lecture on the importance of controlling the pollution and preserving the ecology to students.

He also donated Rs 1lakh for the developmental project. Mr Kulwant Singh, Xen, PPCB, also delivered a lecture on the preventive and remedial measures to check pollution.

Dr Madanjit Kaur Sahota, Principal of the college , stressed on the need for celebrating cracker free Divali.Mr Swaran Singh, president, college managing committee, proposed a vote of thanks. Students took a pledge to usher in a cleaner, greener and healthier tomorrow by planting saplings and keeping the environment clean.The two-day programme culminated in anti-pollution rally in which students marched through Deepak Cinema, Damoriya Bridge, Kailash Cinema, Dandi Swami, Police line, Kitchlu Nagar, Ferozepore Road, Nanaksar and returned to the college via Jagraon Bridge, Clock Tower and Mata Rani Chowk. Mr Sharanjit Singh flagged off the rally. The programme was organised as a part of the ongoing Vigyan Chetna Year— 2004 in collaboration with the Punjab Pollution Control Board, Patiala.

School organises Divali mela

U.S.P.C. Jain Public School organised a Divali mela yesterday on the school premises. Students along with teachers had set up stalls of games and eatables. The mela was inaugurated by Mr M.P. Jain. Ms Yachana Chawla, Principal, Mr S.C. Jain, Chairman, Education Board, and other board members were also present on the occasion. Prizes were distributed after the mela ended.

"Fantasy Fete—2004" was organised at Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, here yesterday to raise funds for the completion of the new school auditorium. It was inaugurated by Mr Rajinder Gupta, Managing Director, Abhishek Industries Ltd. Students, parents and well wishers of the school as well as children turned up in their best to support the noble cause for which the fete was organised. More than 40 food and games stalls were set up on the occasion.Tambola, music on request, rides, and computers games stalls attracted a huge crowd.Old students of the school had put up a stall to create a database of the school alumni.Mr Onkar Singh Pahwa, Managing Director, Avon Cycles Ltd, presided over the felicitation and closing ceremony.

The Principal, Sister Maria Leena, thanked the chief guests, the district administration, parents and teachers for their efforts to make the fete a grand success.

Sports tournament concludes

The 26th annual sports tournament of Shamgarh village concluded here on Sunday. The tournament was inaugurated by the local MLA, Mr Amrik Singh Dhillon. A grant of Rs 1 lakh was announced by Mr Sukhdev SIngh Libra, MP.

On the concluding day prizes were distributed among winners by Mr S.S. Dharamsot, Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab Government. While talking to mediapersons he said all pucca roads leading to schools and dharamshala would be repaired or constructed before March 31. He also announced a grant of Rs 21,000 to the Sports Club.

In 32kg kabaddi category Mutton and Lal Kalan villages stood II; in 37 kg kabaddi category Khattran School stood first and Uksi II; in 42 kg kabaddi Kulewal stood first and Kakrala village II; in 47 kg Natt village stood first and Shehnaz IInd; 52 kg Shehzad stood first and Natt II; 55 kg Hargana stood first and Jhanderi IInd; 62 kg Jhanerri first and Shamgarh IInd; village kabaddi team Zargarri first, Ber Khurd II, and in dogs race:dog of Rajwant Singh Kakrala stood first and that of Sajanpreet Singh second.

State to host Asian ball pool tourney

Minister for Co-operation Punjab, Jasjit Singh Randhawa, yesterday said that the state would like to host the Asian Ball Pool Championship. He also stressed that games like ‘Billiards and snooker should be popularised to tap talent in the state.

He said this while speaking at the 4th National ONGC Ball Pool Championship here today. He said that the State Government was giving main stress to strengthen the sports infrastructure in the state, so that, the players of international level could be produced in different games by imparting them good training.

The Minister was addressing a function in connection with the ONGC 4th National Ball Pool Championship organised by Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association at Satul Club here.

He announced a grant of Rs 50,000/- for the association.
