Johar lays stress on quality education

Education Minister Harnam Dass Johar has stressed upon the need for substantial improvement in the standard of education in colleges under Punjab Technical University.

Mr Johar was addressing the prize distribution function of the two-day-zonal youth festival of PTU at Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology late last night.

Mr Johar called upon the PTU authorities to check the quality of education in these colleges and allow only those institutions to run which had the required infrastructural facilities.

The minister asked the PTU authorities to collaborate with the reputed universities of the developed countries for dual degrees, so that the passed out students could get good jobs abroad.

Mr Johar announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the GGNIMT for financial assistance to the poor students.

Brig. (Dr.) S K Salwan, Vice - Chancellor, Punjab Technical University, informed that they have chalked out a comprehensive plan to enhance the standard of education in the institutions running under their control and asserted that only those college would be allowed to run which would provide the facilities as per the fixed norms of the university.

He said that the work on the construction of new Campus of the University to be set up over an area of 110 acres of land at a cost of Rs. 6 crores was being started shortly. He informed that the University has also planned to collaborate with the reputed universities of the world for the duel degree programme.

Mr Gunwant Singh Dua, coordinator, GGNIMT, highlighted the achievements of GGNIMT and Khalsa Education Council in various fields.

Others present included Mr M.S. Grewal, Registrar, Mr Jaspal Singh, Cultural Coordinator, PTU and Mr Kuldeep Singh, Director, GGNIMT.

Later, Mr. Johar presided over another function organised by the Bhagwan Valmiki Dharamshala Sewa Society in connection with Parkash Utsav of Bhagwan Valmiki at Jawahar Nagar. The minister announced grants of Rs 50,000 each for two Government Primary Schools in the mohalla.

250 teachers attend maths workshop

A maths workshop was organised in KVM here yesterday. It was conducted by Prof Hukum Singh, the Head of Department and Professor of maths at the NCERT, Delhi.

In the one-day workshop, he taught maths teachers how to teach the subject. About 250 teachers from all schools here participated in the workshop.

Teachers from Jalandhar and Nabha were also present.

At the workshop, he was accorded a floral welcome by Principal S C Saxena. The art of setting a maths lab was also taught.

He guided the teachers on making and using of working and non-working models. He gave tips of how to memorise and apply formulae. The teachers had to make projects and some models on the spot. There were more than 100 participants from 42 schools of Ludhiana and nearby.

Healthy baby contest: Sacred Heart Convent School organised a healthy baby contest here today. Nearly 400 babies from one-and- a- half year to six years participated in it.

Dr Jagdish Chatwal, professor and Head of Paediatric Department, with a team of doctors from Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, examined the babies. Dr Hormise Nirmal Raj, Director of School, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.

Sister Rita Maria, principal, members of the PTA, staff and parents were also present. Schoolchildren also presented various cultural items. The winners are:

Salad decoration: A salad decoration competition was held in BCM School, Chandigarh Road, here today. Since salads have a lot of nutritional value, the schools have started salad-making competitions in order to make the students appreciate its nutritional value of raw eatables and also hone their artistic skills.

Boys of the school participated with a great zeal. Commerce (10+1)was declared the best team. The team comprised Anu, Rikshit, Roohiand Sanskriti.

Divinty competition: In the chain of competitions celebrating birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev, a divinty competition was organised here in Guru Gobind Singh Public School for Kindergarten classes. As many as 31 students participated in the competition.

Divinty in charge Ms Varinder Kaur and Ms Jaspreet Kaur judged the performance of the students. The Principal, Ms Manjeet Kaur, stressed the need to live a life based on the path shown by the Gurus. The result is as follows:

Painting competition: A painting competition was organised by the Pioneer group of companies here yesterday at Balak Autos Showroom. As many as 59 students of 12 schools participated. Mr Jagmohan Sharma, President, District Congress, honoured the winners. Gagandeep of Nankana Sahib Public School won the first prize while Deepinder Kaur of Sacred Heart Secondary School bagged the second prize In the Class VII section Vikramjit Kaur of BCM Senior Secondary School stood first.

Hindi refresher course concludes

A Hindi refresher course, conducted by the Central Hindi Institute, New Delhi, under the auspices of the HRD Ministry, concluded at the Government Inservice Training Centre (GITC) here yesterday.

Ms Usha Sidhu, Principal, GITC, presided over the function. She asked teachers to provide due respect and attention to the propagation of Hindi.

Sudesh Bajaj takes over as DEO

Ms Sudesh Bajaj assumed the charge of the District Education Officer (S) today. She has been in the field of education for the past 27 years. She was appointed Deputy DEO in 2004.

The district administration gave her an award on January 26 this year for her services.

Sacred Heart excel in fencing

Hosts Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, reigned supreme in the two-day Ludhiana District Fencing Championship that concluded here yesterday.

In the epee and foil events for boys, Sacred Heart School lads annexed the overall trophy.

Mr Prag Jain, DIG, Ludhiana, gave away prizes to the winners. Mr A.K. Sharma, Superintendent, Central Excise and Customs, President, Ludhiana District Fencing Association, presided over the prize distribution function.

Results: (girls, under-14 category): foil event — Komal Deol of Sacred Heart School, BRS Nagar 1; Garima Aggarwal of Sacred Heart School, BRS Nagar 2; Sakshi and Jasleen Kaur of Sacred Heart School, BRS Nagar 3; Epee event — Komal Deol of Sacred Heart School 1; Sanchinta of Sacred Heart School 2; Garima Aggarwal and Jasleen Laur of Sacred Heart School 3.
