We all know that Zee TV’s on an overdrive to refurbish its image. It’s bidding adieu to old shows like Kitty Party and Tammana House and is concentrating on beefing up its late-evening slot. Kareena Kareena, which debuted on October 11, revolves around Kareena (Kulraj Randhawa), a simple kudi from Chandigarh who comes to the big bad Mumbai in search of a job. When she learns that a company is looking for a married lady for the post of an executive assistant, she turns up posing as one – and gets the job. As if hiding her marital status was not enough, a friend asks her to fill in for her as a Radio Jockey for a few days. Thus begins Kareena’s dual life caught between two jobs. Slotted for 9:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, Kareena will take on Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin on Sony. Rather ambitious. Mira Nair’s TV treat
Three years after she wowed the global audience with Monsoon Wedding, Mira Nair is ready to shift to the small screen and looks all set to showcase to American viewers what Indian culture is all about. In a new — and yet untitled — comedy for ABC Television, Nair is attempting to repeat on TV her cinematic success with Monsoon Wedding. Here too the pivot of the story is an upper middleclass Punjabi family running a chain of motels in New Jersey. The Oscar-nominated Nair says the series will portray the aspirations and dilemmas of a generation of US-born Indians who are hyphenated between two cultures. "It’s happening all around us. Young Indians are thinking American and their parents are thinking Indian. Those are the new American Indians I am portraying." Wonder if the Indian Indians will ever get to see this engrossing stuff. Friends again For the diehard fans of Friends, here’s some heartening news. Emmy nomined Matt Le Blanc continues his role as the alluring Joey Tribbiani in the new NBC comedy Joey — a spin-off from the world’s No.1 sitcom. The story picks up from where Friends ended when Joey, a wannabe actor, moves to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a superstar. Here he teams up with his young nephew, who is a rocket scientist, and their chemistry results in some hysterical sparks. In real life though, Matt Le Blanc is not laughing, as he has been told to shed 10 kilos and go back to his 1987 waist size when he first started modelling for Levi’s jeans and Coke. Since then he’s starred in numerous TV shows and a few immensely forgettable movies. But with the role of Joey in Friends, Le Blanc’s career had spiralled heavenwards. Now he hopes to recreate the magic that made Friends one of the best comedies ever. |
