South African delegation visits PAU Ludhiana, October 21 The delegation was optimistic in terms of student and faculty exchange programmes between PAU and the University of North at Sovenga in South Africa. The visitors went round the departments of plant breeding, soils, farm power and machinery, economics, animal science and horticulture. They were impressed by the outstanding research work done at the university during the past three decades. They were hopeful of having collaboration with the varsity in the fields of horticulture, farm power and machinery, economics and extension education. Dr Moses Mbewe from the University of North explained the status of education in their country and compared the same with that prevailing at PAU. He complemented the Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S. Aulakh, for ensuring that PAU established excellent rapport with farmers of the state. He said it was rare to see that farmers had such a faith in a farm varsity. Earlier, Dr K.S. Aulakh briefed them about achievements of the university. The visitors also had a discussion with scientists, Deans and Directors of the university. The Dean, College of Agriculture, Dr M.S. Tiwana, the Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, Dr A.P.S. Mann, the Director of Research, Dr G.S. Nanda, the Director of Extension Education, Dr A.S. Sandhu, the Dean, Postgraduate Studies, Dr Darshan Singh, and the Dean, College of Home Science, Dr Manjit Kaur Dhillon, briefed members of the delegation on various aspects of education and research programmes being undertaken at the university. |
5 narcotic smugglers get 10-year RI Ludhiana, October 21 Those who have been sentenced were Jaspal Singh , Joga Singh of Shahkot, Jaswinder Singh of Malsian village , Surjeet Ram and Jaswant Ram of NoorMahal, Jallandhar. Delivering the verdict, Mr Sodhi held that the prosecution has sucessfully proved beyond reasonable doubt the charges levelled against the accused beyond any doubt. The Judge also rejected the plea of leniency raised by the accused. All the accused were also ordered to pay fine of Rs 1 lakh each. In the event of their failure to pay the fine, they would have to spend one more year in imprisonment, observed the Judge. According to the prosecution on March 15, 2002, the SHO of Shimlapuri police station,Mr Waryam Singh along with a police party was patrolling near the bridge of Gill canal. He
received secret information that the accused were bringing narcotics in a tempo and TATA-Sumo and would enter the Ludhiana from Doraha side. Following this, the police party swung into action and laid a trap on Lohara bridge. Additional police force was deployed and when the vehicles of the accused reached there, the police party stopped them. Thereafter, the DSP,Mr SnehDeep Sharma was called there and in his presence search was conducted. Twenty five
bags, containing poppy-husk, weighing around 30 kgs were recovered from the tempo and six bags weighing 40 kgs were recovered from the TATA -Sumo, in which the accused were travelling. The accused were booked under the NDPS Act at Shimlapuri police station on March 15, 2002, as per the prosecution. Two
accused, Malkiat Singh and Santokh Singh were declared proclaimed offenders. Based on the arguments of the Additional Public
Prosecutor, Mr Iqbal Singh and the evidence adduced by the prosecution on record, the Court found them guilty. |
