Child healthcare week from Nov 14

Ludhiana, October 18
The Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), Ludhiana chapter, will celebrate IAP Child Health Care Week from November 14. Dr Rajinder Gulati, president of the branch, said main stress would be on health education activities. A healthy baby contest would be held on Children’s Day along with inter-school group dance competition at Lions Bhawan.

Elaborating on other events, Dr A.K. Handa, secretary of the branch, said children between 0-5 years would be eligible to participate in the healthy baby contest. The forms of the contest had been distributed to most of the nursery schools. Registration forms were also available with most of the paediatricians. The last date of registration is November 1.

The participants would be divided into five groups depending upon their age and in each group three prizes would be given. A special cash prize would be given to the IAP Child of the Year.

BVM School athletes, judokas dominate

Ludhiana, October 18
In the 17th Punjab State Inter-Schools Athletics and Judo Championship organised by the Sarvhitkari Educational Society at Dhuri in Sangrur district from October 8 to 10, the local Bharitya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, proved its supremacy by clinching as many as 54 medals, including 31 gold, besides the overall championship trophy in athletics. Judokas (girls) of this school garnered four gold medals to win the trophy in the u-19 category.

Giving this information, Mr Baljeet Singh Gill, in charge of sports of BVM School, said more than 800 boys and girls from different schools of the state took part in this three-day meet. Priya Bawa and Maneet Sharma of BVM School were declared the best athletes among the girl and boy participants, respectively.

Another student of this school, Amandeep Singh, made BVM School proud by emerging the best athlete in the u-17 category.

Priya bagged three gold medals (800m, 1500m and 3km cross-country run) and Maneet came out triumphant in three events (200m, 400m and 800m races) while Amandeep Singh emerged victorious in 800m, 1500m and 3000m race.

Other players of BVM School who made their presence felt in this championship were: Judo (girls u-19 years)- 40kg Manjeet Kaur-first; 45kg- Nidhi Arora -first; 50kg- Neenu Arora -first and 56kg- Parul Khanna -first; (u-14 years)- 32kg- Vishali Bawa second.

Athletics — (boys-11 years) 100m Udyay Sharma-first and 400m- Prabhat-second; u-14 years- 100m-Rajdeep Abhi-third and 4x100m relay- BVM-second; 800m- Rohit Sharma- third; 400m- Simranjeet Singh- third.

Girls (u-14 years) — Ganga Gautam- first in 600 m, 400 m and 200 m races; Kamaldeep Kaur-first in discus throw; Deepika Pathak- third in 100m race; u-17 years- Kirti Sharma- first in 200 m and second in 100 m race; Manisha Verma- first in 400m and second in 800m.

Boys (u-17 years) — Jasmeet Singh-second in 100m; Amandeep, Raman, Jasmeet and Tarun Sood- first in 4x100m relay.

Boys (u-19 years) — Parmod- first in 100m; Dalpreet Singh- first in 1500m; Deepak Gautam- first in 5000m and Tarun- second in shot put and discus throw; Manik, Dalpreet, Deepak and Parmod- second in 5km cross country race.

Girls (u-19 years) — Manisha Gupta- first in 100m; Isha Jagota- first in long jump and third in shot put; Rupali Arora- first in 200 m and third in discus throw; Sakshi Talwar- first in 5000m.

Meanwhile, Ms Sunil Arora, Principal of the school, joined BVM trustees Mr Mitter Sain, Mr Madan Mohan Vyas and Mr K.C. Maini in congrtulating the medal winners and Mr Baljeet Singh Gill, sports in charge on this fine performance.

Guru Nanak school shines in hockey, gymnastics

Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary school has made commendable achievements in the field of hockey and gymnastics at the zonal-level, district-level as well as state-level championships, both for girls and boys organised recently.

The hockey team of girls of the school secured first place at the zonal-level tournament organised at Sahnewal. Again, in the under-14 competition, organised at the district level, the team secured the second position. In the open-district women championship, the girls’ hockey team achieved the third position. Seven players of the school participated in the state level championship and became state champions from Ludhiana.

Again in the under-17 hockey tournament for boys organised at the zonal level, Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary School secured second position. In the under-14 category, too, the hockey team of the school secured the second position. In the district-level tournament five boys of the school participated at Sahnewal and secured the first position for the team. Three boys of the school were selected for the district-level championship to be organised soon.

Giving this information to the press, Ms Urmil Sood, Principal of the school, said the school students had also excelled in gymnastics. In the district-level, under-19 competitions the gymnasts of the school won four medals. Again, in the under-14 district level competitions, the gymnasts of the school won 11 medals.

Maninderjit Singh was declared the all-round Best Gymnast and Dupinder Singh occupied the third position. Four students of the school participated in state-level competitions. In the state-level competitions organised at Bathinda. Dapinder Singh of the school and Gurvir Singh won silver medals, she said.

Khed mela begins

Jagraon, October 18
Khed Mela, which was organised at the Police Lines, Jagraon today was inaugurated by Mr Rajiv Ahir, SSP. On the opening day tug of war and a volleyball match was played. Jagraon DPO team defeated Raikot subdivision team in volleyball. Jagraon subdivision team defeated Dakha subdivision team in tug of war.
