40,000 city residents are asthmatic: doc
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 17
Not withstanding its claim to cleanliness the city has a large number of asthmatic patients in the country. Highlighting this fact at the 19th annual update in pulmonary and critical care medicine which was held at PGI today, Dr D. Behera of the PGI said: “The presence of pollen in the air is comparatively high in the city leading to more asthma cases.

The presence of dust is also high and due to weather conditions the city witnesses more cases of allergic diseases.’’

Precautions in case of acute bronchitis

  • If respiratory distress along with yellow sputum is not cured even after taking medicines over a period of time, it could be symptom of acute bronchitis.
  • Only an expert physician should be consulted if symptoms persist.

Nearly 40,000 persons are suffering from asthma in the city and a majority of them have it by birth approximately 3 to 5 per cent of the city population is affected with the allergic disease. The disease aggravates when seasons change — especially during March, April and September and October with patients requiring medication and inhaler to keep the complications at bay.

Over 150 delegates from the region, including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi, held discussions on “Acute respiratory care’’ which included discussions on management of acute asthma, acute chronic obstructive, and acute respiratory failure.

In the scientific sessions, doctors deliberated on the critical care needed by the patients in case of acute bronchitis. The doctors said the patients should be able to identify when they are slipping into acute bronchitis, which is a respiratory distress.

Its common causes include medicines taken for a long period of time which prove ineffective and cough along with sputum in case of acute respiratory problems, only expert physician should be consulted rather than consulting a general physician.

“Our critical care units in the department of pulmonary medicine at the PGI are always full to their capacity. We, therefore, always press for the need to develop good critical care at the primary health centres for better health care,” said Dr Behera.
