A drug awareness rally was organised by the local unit of the NSUI at GGN Khalsa College in Ghumar Mandi here today to highlight the problem among the youth.
Addressing students on the occasion, Sumandeep Singh Jassar, president of the outfit, said it was a matter of concern that youngsters were seeking refuge in drugs instead of standing up to the pressures of life. The menace had reached alarming proportions and if steps were not taken, an entire generation would become addicts,  he said.

He said the youth were to shape the future of the nation, which required well-rounded personalities.

The student leader demanded stringent measures so that the punishment meted out for drug offences acted as deterrent. While the government made tall claims about carrying out drug control drives across the state, the number of chemist shops selling banned drugs was increasing, he alleged.
