PAU man on FMD project review panel

Ludhiana, October 4
Prof M. S. Oberoi, Dean, College of Veterinary Science, Punjab Agricultural University, has been nominated by the Director-General, ICAR, New Delhi, as Chairman of the Quinquennial Review Team for the work done by the Project Directorate on Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

The team will review the work done on the FMD virus during the past five years and suggest ways and means to improve the working of the project. The Government of India has launched a systematic control programme to reduce the economic burden of this disease on the dairy sector.

FMD alone causes losses of Rs 4,000 crore to the animal wealth. The review of the research done on FMD will help in recommending the latest diagnostic and control measures to reduce the ill effects of this disease. The other members of the team are from Chennai, Hyderabad and Guwahati.

PAU department head retires

Dr L.K. Garg, Senior Research Engineer and Head, Department of Farm, Power and Machinery, at the College of Agricultural Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University, has retired after serving the varsity for 32 years. Dr Sewak Singh Ahuja has taken over as Head of the department.

Dr Garg started his career in 1972 as a research assistant and rose to be Senior Research Engineer in 1991. During his tenure, Dr Garg has played a leading role in developing machines useful and economical for the agriculture.

NSS camp concludes

Ludhiana, October 4
The 10-day NSS camp at Kamla Lohtia Sanatan Dharam College here concluded today. A cultural programme was organised by the volunteers at the closing ceremony.

Sewing machines were distributed by the volunteers among needy and poor women. Programme officers Yograj Anglish and Deepak Dhingra presented a summary of the activities undertaken by the volunteers during the camp.

The volunteers interacted with children of slum areas and visited Shri Rama Charitable Hospital to distribute fruits and milk among patients. Lectures were delivered to create awareness among the volunteers. The function concluded with the National Anthem.

Cancer awareness

Mr Sukhdeep Gill (manager, educational programme) from Global Cancer Concern, India, gave information on cancer, its causes, symptoms and prevention to students and staff of USPC Jain Public School. He also spoke on alternative forms of medicine for this deadly disease. Early diagnosis was essential, he added.

EXHIBITION: Year of Scientific Awareness-2004 is being celebrated at Baba Isher Singh (N) Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, here. A science exhibition was inaugurated by Baba Gurmail Singh (Nanaksar Wale) on Monday. The school principal, Ms Aneeta Kundra, presided over the function. Several competitions like skit, quiz and chart making were organised. Several schools participated in the skit competition. Mr Varinder Sharma, District Science Supervisor, was the chief guest. The school president, Mr M.S. Chahal, was also present at the time of inauguration. An extempore speech for teachers, lecture-cum-demonstration and the prize distribution function will be held on Wednesday.

Teachers suspend protest

The Guru Nanak Engineering College Teachers Association has decided to temporarily suspend its peaceful protest. The association was protesting against the suspension of Prof J.N. Jha.

According to a press note of the association, the decision to suspend the protest was taken unanimously by the joint action committee of the association and GND Polytechnic employees.

Gursikh Club stages play

A historical play, “Ankhelay Yodhay Sukha Singh, Mehtab Singh”, was staged at the monthly meeting of the Gursikh Family Club here today. The project coordinator of the club, Mr Prabhjot Singh, said they had been imparting knowledge on the glorious past of the Sikhs by staging plays which highlighted the sacrifices made by the martyrs. Other allied activities were also being organised for the past three years and the membership of the club had been increasing with each passing month. “We offer a platform for the old and the young to interact and also to have a good time,” he added.

Another important activity of the club was a matrimonial service. In view of its success, it had been decided to operate a placement service also so that the youth could get meaningful employment, he pointed out.

Prof Harjinder Singh Dilgir released a book, “Gurmat Nirnay Kosh”, written by Dr Gursharanjit Singh, on the occasion.

Others present on the occasion included Giani Jagmohan Singh, Principal Baljit Singh, Mr Jujhar Singh, Mr Devinder Singh, Mr Amanpreet Singh, Mr Arvinder Khalsa and Mr Daljit Singh Sikri.
