Men in blue
Jaspal Bhatti

Cops in Punjab will soon be donning a new blue uniform. It is a wonderful idea to change the uniform if not the attitude and style of working of the Punjab Police. I feel they should be attired in a flowery uniform with colourful caps to look more pleasant to the general public.

Someone is likely to ask that if the police is going to be so pleasantly attired, how are the anti-social elements going to fear them? But the truth is that law-breakers as such do not fear the police. It is only the god-fearing, law-abiding citizens who are scared of the police that they even fear asking for help from the police.

There was another interesting point that I noticed. The department has no funds for providing new uniforms to its personnel.

An employee will have to shell out Rs 5000 from his own pocket to buy the approved uniform from the allotted depot on installments.

For this, the policemen can probably try some arm-twisting tactics on any law-breaker to fund his new blue uniform. The greatest benefit of getting these blue uniforms sponsored through culprits is that the culprits will have no problem recognising these men in blue.
