THE Shiv Sena collected old shoes from all over Mumbai. The collection was not for any exhibition. They had been collected to throw on the effigy of Mani Shankar Aiyar in a ‘joota maar rally’. ‘Joota Maar’ rally is the latest idea to bring in the use of old shoes. The purpose of the rally was to lodge a protest against the Congress leader. Mani Shankar Aiyar in his recent visit to the Cellular Jail in Port Blair had ordered removing the plaque bearing Vir Savarkar’s quote. No logic can justify removing the quote of a freedom fighter of Savarkar’s status, who spent 11 years of his life in the dreaded jail. Savarkar had an altogether different ideology from Gandhiji. But that doesn’t deprive Savarkar the status of a great freedom fighter. The ‘Joota Maar’ rally by the Shiv Sainiks to humiliate Mani Shankar Aiyar can go well with the public sentiments, especially in Maharashtra where Savarkar is held in great esteem. Burning effigies, performing last rites, slogan shouting and calling bandhs are all passé now. ‘Joota Maar’ rally is the latest and a most refreshing change in the world of protests. The need of the hour now is to set up a full-fledged research centre on protesting techniques. |
